My partner in crime told me that Christmas had arrived at Costco. Suddenly I had a shopping list that needed to be taken care of RIGHT AWAY! I was sure we were out of something important. We weren’t.  I was lying to myself. For a few minutes I actually believed myself. Silly self. I didn’t go yesterday, and I feel like I should be rewarded for not going. Maybe an ice cream treat. A new shirt? It took a lot of will power not to go and check out all the new shiny holiday decor. I should reinforce such behavior with a reward. UGH!! Do you see what I have to deal with? My brain is such a pest. This quarantine is making my brain crazy. I should go out for essential trips only because of the pandemic, but staying home so much makes me jump at the chance to go out for any reason. Then I freak out thinking everyone is at home improving themselves,  and when they get out they will be fabulous, and I will be the same. I need to change…improve myself.  But how? A shiny new Christmas decoration for the yard! How does a shiny new reindeer for the yard improve me? Dunno… should test out my theory though. ARG!!!!

Brice Bannon served fifteen years in the Coast Guard, most recently as captain of the Deployable Operations Group, (DOG), the Coast Guard’s version of the Army’s Special Forces and Navy’s Seals operations. When the command was decommissioned, rather than accept re-assignment, Bannon retired from the full-time Coast Guard.

But Bannon didn’t leave the Coast Guard behind completely. He remains in the Reserves.

Recruited by the Secretary of Homeland Security, he leads a small, secretive team of specially-trained, highly-skilled operatives capable of responding to and investigating specific, targeted threats against the homeland. Threats that cannot be effectively handled by standard operating means. Threats that call for a unique and often secret approach outside the normal channels of either Homeland Security or the Department of Defense.

When not risking his life for the government, Bannon runs the Keel Haul, his bar in the resort town of Hampton Beach, on the New Hampshire seacoast. There, he also operates as a small town private investigator and tends to get himself in big trouble along with the help of his two best friends and teammates; Tarakesh “Blades” Sardana and CWO Skyjack McMurphy.

No-one comes in peace. Every being in the galaxy wants something, and is willing to take it by force.

The Hedalt were no different. They came from the distant reaches of the galaxy to wage war. Their fleet wanted to take Earth for its prize, but we were ready. We were stronger.

For years, we fought them, ship-to-ship, until we scattered their forces and drove them back. Pursuing the Hedalt fleet to their home world, we delivered the decisive blow. We nuked their planet and wiped them out for good.

Or so we thought.

For decades, Earth Fleet sent out Deep Space Recon missions to scour the galaxy and clean up the remnants of the Hedalt Empire. Eventually, we found only ghosts – empty outposts and long-dead colonies. But, close to the edge of known space, I – Captain Taylor Ray – and my crew are about to make a discovery that will change everything.

The war isn’t over. The war has yet to begin.

Dog Gone (Dev Haskell – Private Investigator Book 12)
by Mike Faricy
4.1 Stars (319 Reviews)
Genre: Mystery, Thriller & Suspense

FREE for a limited time

Dog Gone is the TWELFTH mystery in the highly entertaining Dev Haskell Private Investigator series.

Best in Show! Dog Gone is the Tale of Two Tail-Chasers
Private investigator Dev Haskell’s new lady friend Maddie comes with strings attached: the loosely-knotted tie of her short black silk kimono, and the leash to Morton, her handsome Golden Retriever.
It’s always a sexy mystery when Dev’s on duty, but this caper takes a turn toward buddy adventure when Dev agrees to pet-sit. On their first evening stroll, Dev and Morton are charmed to meet the lovely Princess Anatasia, a purebred Standard Poodle angling for Best In Show title in the Blessington Kennel Club competition the Super Bowl of regional dog competition. But when the princess’ owner gets in a tussle with a local gambling heavyweight, Dev steps in to help, and the prim and proper world of show dog competition is revealed to be, above all, a competition, plus a big attraction for professional gambling! And these guys are playing for high stakes.
It turns out somebody’s trying to keep Princess Anastasia from competing in the show. Dev gets hired to stop them and fortunately, he’s got backup this time: a love struck canine hero. As the suspense builds, a surprisingly touching bond develops between Dev and Morton, and why not? The pair have a lot in common: favored foods and beer brands, preferred places to stick their noses, and a seat-of-the-pants approach to dealing with bad guys.
They got it right when they said, “Faricy’s characters inhabit a world just below the surface of polite society”. Fans of Mike Faricy’s humorous mysteries will welcome the usual constituency of oddball (and sleazeball) characters, who never fail to entertain. Also for fans of Robert B. Parker, Carl Hiaasen, and strong Minnesota men.

MERCY (The Two Revolvers Saga Book 3)
by Dave Matthes
4.6 Stars (9 Reviews)
Genre: Literature & Fiction | Westerns | Science Fiction

FREE for a limited time

“People always start out with courage, and they’ll call it other things too: bravery, fortitude, stalwartness. They start out that way, they think: why not?”

Rancid Mahoney is a gun-for-hire, muscle-for-hire, anything-for-hire, if the money is good enough. Born into a world already having devoured what was once known as civilization, Mahoney takes pride in only one thing: knowing a good deal when he hears one. Until parentless eleven-year-old Billy Hargraven asks of him the simplest of tasks: to be his protector as he traverses the wasteland in search of a doctor who can help his dog. The money is good, and so Mahoney accepts and the three venture out into a burned world filled with the bleakest of uncertainty. Along the way, they encounter Til Drange, an old companion/sometimes enemy of Mahoney, who warns them of increasing bloodshed in the area. The encounter will lead Mahoney into perhaps the bloodiest battle of his life, pitting him against cannibals, malicious creatures, and cultists, but worst of all: his own conscience in regards to Billy’s safety, and future.

MERCY is a western set in a post-apocalyptic era populated by the last remnants of humanity, in which there is very little humanity left to be found.
