Today the baby bassets and I are going to color Easter eggs, so I bought white eggs from the store. They look so white. I am really thrown off by how clean and white they are. Not one feather or piece of poop on them. I almost wonder if they are bleached. They are not, but it’s funny how quickly I judge them by their lack of dirtiness. After I color one I will throw it into the ladies coop and confuse the heck out of them. Jackie will demand to know who is laying  the rainbow colored eggs.

A haunting novel set in the North Yorkshire Moors about isolation, superstition and persecution. Thores-Cross follows the stories of Emma, a present day writer, and Jennet, an eighteenth century witch.

Emma Moorcroft is still grieving after a late miscarriage and moves to her dream house at Thruscross Reservoir with her husband, Dave. Both Emma and Dave hope that moving into their new home signifies a fresh start, but life is not that simple. Emma has nightmares about the reservoir and the drowned village that lies beneath the water, and is further disturbed by the sound of church bells – from a church that no longer exists.

Jennet is fifteen and lives in the isolated community of Thores-Cross, where life revolves about the sheep on which they depend. Following the sudden loss of both her parents, she is seduced by the local wool merchant, Richard Ramsgill. She becomes pregnant and is shunned not only by Ramsgill, but by the entire village. Lonely and embittered, Jennet’s problems escalate, leading to tragic consequences which continue to have an effect through the centuries.

Emma becomes fixated on Jennet, neglecting herself, her beloved dogs and her husband to the point where her marriage may not survive. As Jennet and Emma’s lives become further entwined, Emma’s obsession deepens and she realises that the curse Jennet inflicted on the Ramsgill family over two hundred years ago is still claiming lives. Emma is the only one who can stop Jennet killing again, but will her efforts be enough?

The rustling of the trees reached my ears, but I immediately concentrated and returned to listening to Monsieur Kreps. “Despite my advanced age and my vast experience, I was not destined to receive the ability to enter the depths of the supreme worlds, and therefore I will only be able to instruct you until a certain point, which is the point of no return for me. At that point, I will need to disconnect and return to reality, while you will have to continue on your own, using your insight and your transcendental characteristics. Remember everything that you have learned about the need and ability to separate emotion from reason. You must rise up over all feelings of fear, desire, love, affection and awe. We will define the objective now and you will attach your entire soul and strength to executing the task. If you do not succeed, your soul will continue to wander through unknown worlds and you will not be able to ever return to the earthly existence with which we are familiar. In this disconnected state, your mental experiences will cause your heart to accelerate until it fails to function, which will cause your death.”

I nodded in agreement as I felt my heart accelerate its beating and excitement thrilling my entire being.

Before the Babylonians succeeded in breaking down the walls of Jerusalem, King Zedekiah instructed a select group of warriors to take the hidden scrolls kept in the Holy Temple and flee the city.

The hidden scrolls were concealed in the Judean Desert, their hiding place known only to a few, members of the “Descenders to the Chariot.” The members of the group hid the existence of the scrolls and passed on the secret to their children and grandchildren who later migrated to Egypt, Carthage, Iberia, Mauritania and some of the European countries.

The descendants of those who had fled Jerusalem lived in exile for over two thousand five hundred years, where they suffered from ostracism, murder, coercion and religious persecution. In every generation, they anticipated the one whose courageous soul would grant him the ability to use the information concealed in the scrolls.

This moving and intriguing novel chronicles the fascinating saga describing the suspenseful, painful and heartfelt events in the life of Moses Ben Yishai, born at the turn of the twentieth century in a small village in the Sahara Desert. The central narrative describes the protagonist’s experiences during the second World War is interwoven with short compelling stories about special people born during past generations , since the destruction of the Holy Temple to the beginning of the twentieth century.
