Timecachers
By: Glenn R. Petrucci
4.1 Out of 5 Stars (22 Reviews)
Genre: Historical Fiction | Science Fiction

FREE for a limited time

Adam Hill is the owner/engineer of Overhill Engineering, an independent product testing company. He and his three contracted engineers, Alice Delvecci, Tom Woody, and wisecracking Salvador Lolliman have accepted a contract to test a revolutionary navigation device, a handheld unit similar to a GPS receiver that has the capability to provide precise navigational information without the need of a supporting satellite system.

During field testing in the remote wilderness of northwest Georgia, they meet John Carter, a Cherokee Indian who informs them it is May, 1838. Their initial shock and disbelief diminishes as they encounter indisputable evidence that they truly have been transported to the nineteenth century. The Timecachers are introduced to several Cherokee families and individuals who, due to their cultural acceptance of magic and mysticism, exhibit remarkably little astonishment at meeting travelers from another time. As they come to know them as individuals, the Timecachers find the Cherokees of 1838 to be remarkably intelligent, eloquent, sincere, and highly sociable people, with lifestyles more similar to their own than they imagined.

They are introduced to the true Tsalagi Nation, a well-organized community of cultured, spiritual people who are frustrated by the relentless encroachment of white settlers on their lands and the broken promises of the U.S. government. Despite the Cherokees attempts to accommodate the settler’s lust for their land and adapt their own government and social structure to be more acceptable to the whites, the state of Georgia portrays them as feckless, uncivilized savages and insists on the complete removal of all Native Americans from its borders. The state is prepared to enforce those demands forcibly with its militia, backed by the immense power of federal armed forces, leaving the Cherokee little choice but to leave behind their beloved ancestral homeland. As the story progresses, the team must put aside the shock of time-travel to deal with the dangerous situation they now face, the Cherokee roundup and the beginning of the Trail of Tears.

“The Invader has taken everything from us… except our free will.”
– Admiral Franks, “Transmissions from Black Heaven”

Remember the Choose Your Own Adventure books? Remember playing the lead role, making choices and influencing the story, and either surviving or dying based on your choices? Solo-gaming books used to be everywhere – and then they disappeared for no good reason.

Now, they’re back.

In Heavy Metal Thunder, our solar system has been overrun by extraterrestrial invaders. You play as a soldier in the human resistance. While cut off from your unit, you find out that your allies in the resistance are being tracked down by the alien invaders and will be ruthlessly crushed… unless you can find them and warn them before it’s too late.

On your journey you’ll meet the wild dregs of the solar system, and it will be up to you to choose how to deal with them. Do you help out those who have given up the fight against the invaders, or do you take shortcuts and gun down anyone in your way? As you learn how to fight the invaders you’ll gain levels and new skills, but limited resources will make it impossible to save everyone.

Heavy Metal Thunder is the first book in an epic series that chronicles your role in humanity’s war against the mysterious and overpowering invaders. In later installments you can lead other soldiers, join an elite special forces unit, and even command your own battleship. All sections are hyperlinked, so you won’t have to worry about flipping through dozens of sections after making a choice. No dice are required, but you can keep track of your stats and equipment if you’re down with RPGs and nerd culture.

Danger Zone
By: Doreen Owens Malek
4.4 Out of 5 Stars (8 Reviews)
Genre: Contemporary Fiction | Romance

FREE for a limited time

DANGER ZONE has a tough, cavalier loner for a hero in Steve Colter, and the fun in this story is watching Karen Walsh worm her way gradually into his mercenary’s heart and break down his defenses. He tries hard to resist her and maintain his independent existence but the reader can tell from word one that he will eventually surrender. The story takes them around the globe but never far from each other’s thoughts, and when at the conclusion Colter transforms his life to keep Karen with him it is gratifying and fulfilling but not a surprise. The story also features a wise and witty best friend for Karen in Linda Folsom, a savvy Brit with a wicked sense of humor who keeps the saga humming along on the rare occasions when Colter is offstage.
