My backyard is an absolute disaster. Leaves from the tree have completely covered the ground, and after all the rain we had, are all a big mushy mess. There are more spent flowers than alive it seems. I keep telling myself that I should leave it alone because the bugs need it, but now I hate being in the garden. On the other hand I have no time now to clean it, and even less time to just sit out there and enjoy it. On social media I see all these pictures of beautiful winter gardens and think to myself that I have failed and I am a bad gardener. But maybe I am just a regular person who has a lot of stuff to do. Let the bugs be happy.

An Old-Fashioned Girl
by Louisa May Alcott
4.5 Stars (647 Reviews)
Genre: Teen & Young Adult

FREE for a limited time

Louisa May Alcott, highly popular author of “Little Women”, wrote a less known literary jewel in 1869, “An Old-Fashioned Girl”.

“An Old-Fashioned Girl” is a morality tale, it’s the town mouse and the country mouse, it’s a romantic love story with a happy ending and with some satisfactory twists to keep it fresh, and it’s a novel of women’s emancipation in the Gilded Age of America in the late 19th century.

“An Old-Fashioned Girl” revolves around Polly Milton”, the old-fashioned girl who titles the story. Polly visits her wealthy friend Fanny Shaw in the city and is overwhelmed by the fashionable and urban life they live–but also left out because of her “countrified” manners and outdated clothes. However, Polly’s warmth, support and kindness eventually win her the hearts of all her friend´s family members. Six years later, Polly comes back to the city to become a music teacher.
