I am still so amazed at how much the front yard has exploded with life. It was a really tough decision for me to take out the front lawn and replace it with rocks and plants. All my life everyone had a front lawn. You were almost judged as a family on how nice your lawn was. As I type it out it’s really sinking in just how weird that was. The part that really amazes me is the whole, “Build it and they will come” part of it. All I had to do was create the environment with bee friendly plants and rocks and they came! I love going out in the morning and walking around the dry riverbed, and seeing all the sleeping ladybugs. It’s quiet. Then, as the sun starts to shine on the plants and the air warms up, the bees come. Fat bumble bees and honey bees start arriving and the sound of humming fills the air. The lizards pop out of wherever they live and start sunning themselves on the warm rocks. They run around darting in and out of the plants, do a few push-ups and dart away again. It’s absolutely mesmerizing. It was a hard decision to take out the lawn, but it wasn’t until I did that I realized just how desolate lawns are.
