It is very unsettling when you smell the very strong and unmistakable smell of smoke right when you are laying down to go to sleep. We have been hearing fireworks going off for weeks now, and it was just a matter of time before some idiot was going to start a fire. In California we have had enough with the fires. DONE BEYOND DONE! Hubby and I checked the local news sources and alerts, and nothing had been reported. That made us feel only slightly better. At 1 a.m. I finally fell asleep. This morning, when I woke up, I could still smell the strong smoke smell. I went online to check the police reports and I saw a short but shocking list of burglaries, death, and car accidents. OH MY!! Ok.. I am sorry I complained about the smell of smoke. I will take smoke over burglaries, death, and car accidents. THIS! This is why I don’t watch the news and spend my free time shoveling large amounts of dirt and riding bikes with my family. Dirt is good.

Alfheim Academy

Genre: Teen & Young Adult | Literature & Fiction
FREE for a limited time
A new series from internationally bestselling author S.T. Bende.
Aura Nilssen has spent most of her sixteen years in hiding. As crown princess of Alfheim, her life depends on avoiding the assassins who killed her parents and want to destroy her realm. When hunters corner Aura on Midgard (Earth), she’s immediately evacuated and enrolled at Alfheim Academy — a training ground where telepathic teenagers, daily combat lessons, and communication from beyond is the norm. She attends classes that enhance her energetic abilities, labs that fine tune her mental acuity, and workouts with a supernaturally good looking — and suspiciously evasive — training partner. But it’s what she learns outside the classroom that proves most difficult: as Queen of Alfheim, Aura’s grandmother played a heartbreaking role in the death of Aura’s parents… and her iron fisted monarchy is pushing the realm to the brink of extinction. If Aura doesn’t take her grandmother’s crown, the home she’s only just begun to love may be lost forever.
When an unprecedented attack threatens the very heart of Alfheim, Aura has to decide what she’s willing to sacrifice to protect her new home. Her choice may mean the difference between survival and annihilation — not only for Aura, but for the world she’s always been destined to rule.

A Pearl for Kizzy: A World War II Novel (Kizzy series Book 1)
by Ed Bethune
(55 Reviews)
Genre: Literature & Fiction | Coming of Age
FREE for a limited time
Kizzy, a spirited child, lives with her family on a one-room ramshackle houseboat in Big Pearl, Arkansas. They fish, dig for mussels, look for pearls, and sell the shells to the button factory. It is a crude life made harder by the Great Depression, natural disasters, and prejudice.
At the onset of World War II, Kizzy befriends a young boy — a refugee from Nazi Germany — and a cultured young woman who encourages her to read and learn from Jane Austen’s books.
Kizzy yearns for a better life, but as she comes of age her dream of getting off the river is threatened by the evil Bully Bigshot and his Eugenics Center, a corrupt outfit that wants to rid the world of “river rats” like her through abortion and “better breeding.”
… And there is Cormac, the lascivious man Kizzy calls her “make-do stepfather.”
Kizzy’s struggle mimics today’s culture war. Daring, but realistic, the novel examines love, pride, compassion, courage, hope, morality, and duty — the things that inform and shape our destiny.
