I am so happy to report that yesterday our bees received a clean bill of health. I had mentioned to you that the gentleman who had given Rachael and I our last two bee colonies wanted to take a look at our setup and see how they were doing. It was a fantastic visit filled with tons of very important information that quickly filled up a few pages of notes. He gave us some great advise on a few changes on how we inspect our hives, and a few items we needed for each of our setups. All things that would make our lives a lot easier. Most importantly he said that our bees were happy and healthy, and this year we would easily see about 30 pounds of honey from our original hive. The other two wouldn’t see any honey this year, but for sure next year. I was on cloud 9 yesterday. The bee clubs in our area have people who are more than happy to mentor new beekeepers, but I was hesitant to work with anyone. Sometimes it’s hard to let new people into your life, but after getting to know this wonderful guy I was more than happy to have him inspect our hives and get his thoughts. I am so glad we did.

When Clare Ballard sports a new bruise on her right cheek the day after a contentious town meeting, the ladies of the Thursday Morning Breakfast Club suspect her husband Roger of abusing her. That same day Hester Franklin, another breakfast club lady, is called to rescue her grandson Patrick after he is arrested for transporting drugs. Proclaiming his innocence, Patrick threatens that those who set him up will pay. Roger Ballard is high on his list.

But it’s when Lillie Mae Harris, the club’s leader, discovers the body of the local drug dealer on the nearby hiking trail, that the community is upended. Roger Ballard, the primary suspect, goes missing, and when his body turns up in his own back yard, Clare Ballard confesses to his murder. No one believes she did it, but Clare insists she’s guilty and mysteriously refuses to talk to her lawyer, the police, or her family and friends.

The Thursday Morning Breakfast Club ladies believe she’s protecting someone, and they vow to find out who it is. Charlie Warren, the town’s homegrown policeman, using unconventional means, collaborates with the breakfast club ladies to draw out the real criminal. But danger lurks.

Alice Portman, the matriarch of the breakfast club, is struck down in her own yard and is sent to the hospital. Then others in the small community start to disappear — one after the other. As the ladies get closer to the truth, they get closer to the danger. With no time to cry over spilled coffee, they form a plan to capture the true culprits before someone else is murdered.

The Widow Makers: Historical Fiction
by Jean Mead
3.7 Stars (47 Reviews)
Genre: Historical Fiction | Contemporary Fiction

FREE for a limited time

Mead’s novel The Widow Makers is inspiring reading; a classic tale, full of all the ingredients which make for the finest novels. Based in the mid-19th century, it tells the story of the young Standish family, who move from the coalfields of Lancashire to the slate quarries of North Wales. The eldest Standish boy is something of a changeling; he desires a different life and ruthlessly goes in pursuit of his dream of the grandeur and riches of the landowners’ class.
Mead’s exceptional talent as a raconteur lets us share the family’s emotional rollercoaster ride, as they lose the eldest son, as he grasps the riches that are so important to him, regardless of the hurt and misery he causes his family and anyone who dares step in his way. Joe, his father, is a gentle giant of a man and through his eyes we see the beauty and majesty of the Welsh countryside, thus giving this book a greater substance.
