I have been cooped in the house for about five days, baking for three of those days, because the outside has been perfectly miserable with rain and dark clouds. Today however is absolutely gorgeous with the sun shining. It was a perfect time for me to get out in the garden, and clean up a few thousand leaves that have blanketed the entire yard. In a matter of only 45 minutes I managed to fill my entire yard waste bin. The garbage man just left, so it will be another full week before I can add anything more to it. I’m not going to worry about that right now, or the big storm we are expecting tomorrow that will certainly shake loose the rest of the leaves in the trees, blanketing the yard once again. I have a solid 10 minutes to enjoy the clean yard. 9 minutes…8

Nailed (A Ron Ketchum Mystery Book 1)
by Joseph Flynn
(843 Reviews)
Genre: Thrillers | Mystery
FREE for a limited time
Ron Ketchum saw his share of the dark side of life as a cop in Los Angeles. Then he left L.A. to become the chief of police in the Sierra Nevada resort town of Goldstrike. One sunny morning in the mountains, though, he comes upon a crime unlike anything he’s ever seen before.
He finds the body of an African American man nailed to a tree.
The victim is a highly respected minister, and his father is the nationally known televangelist Jimmy Thunder. Ron, on the other hand, has described himself in court as a recovering bigot.
Goldstrike’s mayor for life and movie icon, Clay Steadman, wants Ron to catch the killer fast. Adding to the pressure, the victim’s grandmother comes to town. She tells the media mob that has descended on Goldstrike that God will curse the town until the killer is caught.
That’s when a rogue mountain lion begins attacking people. At first, the attacks happen on the wilderness outskirts of Goldstrike. Then the predator moves into town, leaping a fence into a family’s backyard. Finally, it turns the tables on one of the hunters sent out to bring it down.
Looking for a killer, hunting a lion and defending his own integrity — makes being a cop in L.A. seem like the good old days.

The Sea-Wolf
by Jack London
(409 Reviews)
Genre: Literature & Fiction
FREE for a limited time
As Humphrey van Weyden rides a ferry across San Francisco Bay, he reflects proudly on the publication of his latest essay in the Atlantic. When a sudden collision rips a hole in the ship’s hull, the ferry sinks like a stone, throwing the literary critic into the icy harbor. Rescued by the Ghost, a seal-hunting vessel, van Weyden counts his blessings. Little does he know he’s boarded a ship bound straight for hell.
Brilliant and amoral, Capt. Wolf Larsen rules the Ghost with an iron fist. Forced into backbreaking service as a cabin boy, van Weyden watches helplessly as Larsen terrorizes his crew. But when mounting tensions finally result in outright mutiny, the mild-mannered intellectual will be forced to take a stand against the ruthless tyrant who saved his life.
A rousing tale of adventure inspired by author Jack London’s own maritime experiences, The Sea-Wolf has influenced writers including Ernest Hemingway, George Orwell, and Jack Kerouac.
