Yesterday was a perfect Sunday morning. While sitting at a sweet little bistro set I picked up at an antique shop, I watched an amazing sunrise as I sipped freshly brewed coffee. I had to be careful not to spill it on my freshly pressed floral summer dress. So perfect. So relaxing. Umm….  You know I’m lying, right? Yes I was in the garden, but no dress, just the faded grey sweatpants that have holes in the inseam.  The coffee was good though. I had only warmed it up twice by the time I made it outside to check on the plants.  I was delighted to see a little frog jump onto the path on his way to the other side, and pause to decided if it was best to flee or stay very still to avoid me. After a few minutes of me staring at him, he decided it was best to keep moving. Most likely less out of fear and more because he was tired of my hot coffee breath that washed over his entire body every time I told him how cute he was.  After a few minutes of pulling a few weeds I came across a teenie tiny preying mantis. It was easily only a few days old. I hadn’t bought any eggs this year, so this was a great surprise to me. It’s time like these, when I see the wildlife enjoying the garden I worked so hard on, that I feel like I have succeed as a gardener. Oh, and the bistro set was from Ikea.

A Murder Scene Where Nothing Is As It Seems

Brandy witnesses a murder at a drive thru joint with the unlikely name of CLUCK IT: CHICKEN BY THE BUCKET. And then it turns out nothing at the scene’s what it seems, or at any rate nobody’s who they seem. Seems CLUCK IT is not just a place to clog your arteries, but also a transgender hangout. And with that discovery, you know you’re in New Orleans.

The local, New Orleans Color Never Stops

Brandy’s complex Irish Channel family develops the kind of problem that is a lot more fun on the page than in real life. What to do when your sister gets pregnant with one of the next-door twins, but she doesn’t know which twin? (Be glad it’s Brandy’s problem, not yours.)

She also finds a mysterious box of valuable jewelry under her closet floor, becomes the unofficial caretaker of the Tarot reader across the street who knows the future but can never predict when she’s going to get so drunk she’s going to fall into her own bushes, and develops a strong suspicion about one of her other neighbors, all the while juggling the two Romeos.

Luckily, Brandy Is Better At Solving Mysteries Than She Is At Wrangling Her Boyfriends

The reader can rest assured she’s eventually, and in fine style, going to weave together the myriad mysterious strands that confound the police (who happen to count Boy Friend # 1 among their ranks) and present them the solution with all the panache of an old-style detective like Hercule Poirot, yet none of the pretension. You can almost hear her wondering, “Did I do that?”

“At sunset hour the forest was still, lonely, sweet with tang of fir and spruce, blazing in gold and red and green; and the man who glided on under the great trees seemed to blend with the colors and, disappearing, to have become a part of the wild woodland. Old Baldy, highest of the White Mountains, stood up round and bare, rimmed bright gold in the last glow of the setting sun. Then, as the fire dropped behind the domed peak, a change, a cold and darkening blight, passed down the black spear-pointed slopes over all that mountain world. Milt Dale, man of the forest, halted at the edge of a timbered ridge, to listen and to watch… ” – Zane Grey, “Man of the Forest”
