So much excitement! While hubby and I were out walking the pups around the neighborhood, we came across the mailman trying to help a mom duck and her eleven ducklings cross the road. As you can imagine it was just about the cutest thing you ever saw. We joined in and once the mom and her babies were safely across the road and in the park, we went off on our way. I told hubby I think we should gather them up and take them to the pond. He said to leave nature alone and stop harassing the wildlife. It was a fair statement. When we got home and the baby bassets were out of school, I took them to the park to look for the ducks, just to show them the cute babies. Unfortunately after a short search we discovered my neighbor looking in the storm drain with a mamma duck quacking desperately a few short feet away. DUCKLINGS IN A DRAIN!!! Oh dear. It took three hours, ten neighborhood kids, and four adults to get those little babies back to mamma. It actually only took about 15 minutes to get ten of the ducklings, but one last baby made a run for it down the pipes. After much effort we were not successful. We released mamma and her ten babies in the creek where the drains flow out to giving the lost baby at least a chance to be reunited with his family. I told hubby I would meddle next time. That was tiring work!
