Our plan to move the bees from an oddshaped, rundown beehive setup to a brand new ten frame box did not go as planned. I’m sitting here with a heating wrap around my neck from a pulled muscle, and my right ear is hurting quite a bit from getting stung. I have only been stung twice in my life and both were on my head. OUCH! Yesterday I had set up all the beekeeping gear neatly on a table, and I had plenty of frames and boxes ready to go for whatever we found in the original hive. I had sneaked a peek a few weeks before and saw the top super had frames filled with bees and honey, so I assumed the bottom box had frames as well. After a huge struggle to lift the top box off the lower super (maybe 40 or 50 pounds????), we discovered the bottom box had zero frames. It was just a labyrinth of comb, bees, and honey. All plans out the window. This is how it ALWAYS is with bees. You make 101 plans and they will always throw you a curve ball. My partner in crime was ready to jump in and start pulling comb out, secure it to frames, and spend hours and hours in the heat doing so. I however could not. We had done that before pulling bees out of a pillar, and that was the worst experience of my life with bees. Instead we put the top box back on and made an adapter for an additional ten frame box to rest on top of the smaller original 8 frame boxes. Will this work? I have no idea, but a 15 minute idea is better than hours and hours of heat and honey. Nope, not again.
