I woke up this morning and I should have been feeling horrible and filled with self loathing and regret for what I did last night…but I don’t. I don’t regret one second of the shameful acts I committed. No alcohol or cake was involved. I know you thought it was cake, but no…not this time. My neighbor was at Boudin’s (The bestest bread company in the world) at closing time and they were giving away huge loaves of their fresh baked sourdough bread. She had too much, so she gave me a loaf. YES PLEASE! The baby bassets were off at grandma’s so we didn’t have to be responsible and come up with an actual healthy dinner. Niiice. Bread and butter it is. At first I was going to just let hubby get me the delicious sinful carb, but when he handed me a thin slice with just a little hint of butter I was totally confused. The first words out of my mouth were, “Are you mad at me? Did I do something wrong? What are you trying to say?” His response shocked me and made me wonder if he really knew me as a person and my soul hurt as it questioned the meaning of the universe. He said, “No…just giving you bread and butter.” UGH! I thanked him and daintily ate my sampling of heaven. Then I got my own piece. Knife? No…no knife needed. I ripped off a huge chunk (meaning half the loaf) with my bare hands and shoved half a stick of butter through the center of it. In seconds I was on the couch in my fuzzy robe gnawing on a little piece of buttered heaven. We still have some this morning….guess what I’m doing right now. NAW NAW NAW!

Return to the summer of ’73 and adventure through Alaska as a Smokejumper.
In an odyssey of movement and beauty we move back and forth across Alaska, jumping fires from Kodiak Island to the shadows of Denali, and in the winds of Isabel Pass. The smokejumpers themselves are a varied lot – several are ex-Air America bad boys recently back from covert CIA operations in Southeast Asia, and in no mood to take orders from anyone. The rest of the crew is made up of transfers and no-rehires from the jump bases in the Lower 48 where strict, top-down, authoritarian management made it hard, if not impossible, for them to fit in. Being stuck on Fort Wainwright in a dark and dreary hangar, surrounded by chain link fences and gravel lots, and under the eye of the Army Military Police is a recipe for disaster with a healthy serving of rebellion, heroism, pranks and humor thrown in. Adventure with these smokejumpers as they ultimately come together in an outrageous testimony to the joy of living life fully and playfully in one of America’s last great true-life adventures.
