I am off to the feed store again today for chicken Miracle Grow. My sweet little baby chick Iggy is just not growing. The other chicks are over twice her size and with feathers on their wings and butts. Iggy still looks like the soft little fluffball I bought 11 or so days ago. I have been doing research on the internet and it is both useful and very scary. A lot of the people who have had the same experience say the chick dies. Little Iggy seems to be in good spirits and chirps and eats like a champ, so I am still very hopeful, but I worry. I hate the internet sometimes. If I were to research all my illnesses and pains I have I guarantee you it would tell me I have feline leukemia.

Garth has always wanted to be a werewolf. Since childhood he’s lived on the edges of the pack — the human stepson of the pack leader, the eternal outsider. All he wants is to belong. Well, maybe not all he wants… he wouldn’t say no if the gorgeous Carly ever decided to look twice at him, but she only has eyes for the pack bully. And Garth is itching for the chance to take that bastard down. It seemed like such a great idea to get his werewolf brother to turn him. Or, at least, it seemed like a great idea until he was stuck up a tree in the middle of nowhere, losing blood by the bucketload, with a crazed werewolf waiting for him to fall. And that was even before the pack leader found out what he’d done. The risk of dying from the Change hangs over Garth — but suddenly dying looks like the easy option, compared to living as part of the pack. Because Garth’s never been the kind of guy who follows the rules, but if he doesn’t learn fast, this path he’s chosen will end in exile or death.

What can go wrong on a run in Central Park on your last day of vacation? Even if it is brutally cold? Everyone told Detective Kristen Conner to stay inside, which guaranteed she would go outside — and stumble onto a gang murder that puts her in the cross-hairs of a Russian “Red Mafyia” hit man. Back in Chicago, murder strikes closer to home. Just down the street from where her mom lives, a popular schoolteacher, solid citizen, and great guy — he shovels snow for widows and volunteers to work with underprivileged kids — is found dead. It was supposed to look like an accident, but crime scene investigators discover more than one killing blow to the back of his head. When Detective Kristen Conner lands the case, she knows from day one who the key suspect is. That’s simple. The person most likely to kill you is someone close… someone you know and love. But his wife? The nice lady down the street. How could that be possible? Kristen is about to discover there is more violence beneath the surface of the working-class neighborhood she grew up than she ever dreamed possible. She’s also about to discover that when the Red Mafyia wants you dead, there is no place to hide. You better be ready to fight. Mix in her on-again, off-again relationship with FBI Agent Austin Reynolds, and Kristen Conner is once again swept into a world of danger, intrigue, and a confusing love life.

Beyond All Price (The Civil War in South Carolina’s Low Country Book 2)
Carolyn Poling Schriber
(45 Reviews)
Genre: Historical Fiction
FREE for a limited time
This is an award-winning historical novel. Nellie Chase was a fascinating and complex young woman, but she played only a small part in the machine that was the Union Army. History books have recorded only a few lines about her experiences as a Civil War nurse. She left no personal letters and no formal records, but those whose lives she touched remembered her as an angel of mercy. Her story, told here by a trained historian, is factual whenever events can be documented. Fictional descriptions, conversations, and transitions strive to reflect the true nature of the time in which she lived and struggled.
