My dining room table looks like a bakery exploded on it. I have stacks and stacks of cookies in Tupperwares, plastic plates, and Ziplock backs. I am fully prepared for the Cookie Apocalypse. I had spent every free moment this past weekend baking, decorating, and NOT sampling seven different kinds of Christmas cookies to give to my friends and neighbors. I hope to golly they actually taste good. I tried a few new recipes and no one in the house has spit them back up, so I am going to go with that as a review. Mark those cookies as “Keep Downable”

In a post-apocalyptic world, rebuilt and dominated by porcelain skinned albinos, seventeen year old Joanne Brennan’s pigmented skin is her defining characteristic. It controls every aspect of her life: who she can associate with, where she’s allowed to live and what kind of job she is qualified to hold. Joey may be proud and confident while others of her kind are broken and self-loathing, but she will never be anything more than a “Pig.”

While finishing her senior year of high school, Joey cares for her bedridden mother and works in a swanky coffee shop just to get by. Daily she struggles to maintain her ideals. There was a time when Joey dreamt of equality. The death of her father, the man who raised her to love the pigment in her skin and never accept injustice, changed all that. Now Joey’s hope and determination have made way for apathy.

Unexpectedly, her sad life gets turned upside down with the homecoming of Grey Redcrest, a boy whose pale skin and snowy white hair are as forbidden as they are beautiful. Despite the numerous warnings, Joey can’t deny her inexplicable attraction to him. His interest in her is just as mystifying. What will happen if she lets go of her reservations? Will Grey be everything he claims to be or will he inadvertently lead Joey to discover a much deeper attraction and a means to restore her lost hope.

Christmas Stories You’ve Never Heard: Like How Baby Jesus Had A Cone Head And Stuff

Can I be honest with you and say something I probably shouldn’t admit out loud as a pastor?

The Christmas story sometimes bores me and other times it feels stale and uninteresting like eating the bowl of broccoli and quinoa my wife just served up. I can think of a hundred other things I’d rather be eating, but I’m chowing down because my wife says it’s good for me and I trust her.

Also, I’m pretty sure if I don’t eat this wonderful meal my wife has patiently prepared for the last hour, I may be sleeping downstairs on the couch tonight. That wouldn’t necessarily be the worst thing in the world–Monday Night Football is on.

But you get the point, don’t you? In spite of how much I know in theory that the birth of Jesus was great for me, the Christmas story sometimes feels dull to my soul. This book is for anyone who’s ever felt that way.

It’s for those of us who sometimes feel the pressure to manufacture excitement every December for a story we’ve heard a million and one times.

It’s for those of us who have heard the Christmas story so many times we can recite it backwards in Hebrew, which is impressive because it was written in Aramaic.

Just kidding. It was written in Greek.

This book is for those of us who are secretly more excited to go see Avengers 2 on opening night than go to church on Christmas Eve to hear about the birth of Jesus AGAIN. It’s a call to those of us who feel like the “good news” of a savior being born is “old news.” It’s a call for us to rehear a message we’ve heard many times before.

Ari Grant spends her days helping the troubled youth of Glory City, and her nights trying to feel something other than the cold numbness that has settled in her bones. For years, she satisfies this urge with trips to the tattoo parlor or late night clubbing, but everything changes when she becomes a victim of an armed robbery.

She manages to escape notice from the gunman, a former client, but only because she’s saved by Glory City’s own Vigilante. A hooded man who has impeccable timing when it comes to those in need.

It seems Ari isn’t the only one trying to save lost souls or looking for a life outside their job. She’s caught the attention of Nick Sanders, a handsome attorney at juvenile court. Solid and steady, he seems the perfect fit, but Ari has developed an obsession with Davis, the mysterious and sexy director of a local fight club that rehabilitates delinquent boys.

Each of these men fight for the less fortunate, but not everyone has altruistic motives. When Ari’s female clients begin to disappear, she can’t figure out who to trust. Soon enough it becomes obvious that while Ari watches over the kids of Glory City, someone else has taken to watching over her

One Gently Used Kidney, Free to a Good Home.

When 48 year-old single mother, massage therapist and returning student Ellie meets a young woman with kidney disease, she decides to make it her mission to save the girl. Unfortunately, outdated rules made it difficult for altruistic donors, and besides, the woman doesn’t want a savior. Does this stop Ellie from her quest to “be the change” one seeks in the world? Not a chance.

Told with humor and self-reflection, this inspirational memoir of courage and compassion is interwoven with anecdotal stories that help the reader identify what kind of person commits the selfless act of organ donation. Ellie,a self-described devout agnostic, is kind but often irreverent. She is generous, but she is no saint. Ultimately, becoming a kidney donor has given her a renewed sense of purpose and fulfillment. Lost in Transplantation asserts that we are all capable of altering a human being’s life for the better, including our own.
