Now that the Fourth Of July party is over and cleaned up after, I can get my mind back on the kids school walk-a-thon decorations. The dollar store clerk was a bit baffled with me as I filled a shopping cart with 35 pool noodles. He was definitely peeved with me when I asked what the return policy was. The best reaction of the day was the look on my baby bassets faces when they saw me carrying 35 pool noodles. It was heaven! I will tell you for certain that it is tough to fight of screaming kids with arms full of pool noodles.

When a migrating manatee makes a prolonged stop off the coast of Cape Cod, his unexpected arrival (and the beautiful daughter of the marine biologist who is following him) sets into motion a charming chain of events that will result in 15-year old Al learning the truth about his missing father, the joy and pain of first love, and ultimately even the fate of Hugh Manatee!

The summer of 1984 was a golden time in America. From California, where gymnast Mary Lou Retton was winning Olympic gold, to Cape Cod, where explorer Barry Clifford was discovering pirate gold, the nation seemed obsessed with the precious metal. But for 15-year old Al, that obsession hits a little too close to home when he finds a code-filled notebook belonging to his missing father that may contain the ancient formula for turning lead to gold. Convinced that his father’ s sudden disappearance is connected to his secret experiments in alchemy, Al sets out to find the truth. He enlists the help of Cammie, a beautiful girl staying for the summer while her marine biologist father tracks a wayward manatee, and together they begin unraveling the mystery. But the closer they get to an answer, the closer they grow to each other, and as the end of summer draws nearer, Al wonders if they can break the code without breaking his heart.

Deep Sounding

Genre: Fantasy

This world is not fit for living. Evidently, no one told the dwarfs.

The surface of the world is a mountainous waste. Extreme weather and seasons of total darkness have destroyed most life above ground.

But beneath the earth, one people survive: The dwarfs, who live inside the mountains, have mastered the task of carving out life in a world which does its best to destroy them. Every dwarf has work, all work is critical, and it is only by working together that each mountain–and the greater Ranges they support–can continue to exist.

Those who violate this understanding are removed from the equation: they are exiled above ground, to earn their survival alone. The more heinous the crime, the longer the sentence. Even worse, exiles are only readmitted while the bells of a yearly celebration, the Deepsound, are still ringing. Miss your bells, and your sentence repeats. It’s a punishment so severe that its chief purpose is prevention, for no dwarf can survive it very long.

No dwarf, that is, except Bardan. Cast out of the borough of Whitemount for a crime since forgotten, Bardan faced a sentence so lengthy that most declared him dead before the door had closed behind him.

But they were wrong.

For like dwarfdom itself, the old General was built to adapt — and for over forty years, Bardan has carved himself a life above the ground. But his body is failing. His mind is going gray. The ghosts of old evils are finally closing in.

Bardan’s time is up . . . and his bells are running out.
