Poisoned Soil
T. Young
(49 Reviews)
Genre: Horror | Fantasy
FREE for a limited time
Set in the mountains of Georgia, Poisoned Soil is a harrowing, cinematic story of greed and retribution that follows Blake Savage, a ruined football star who risks everything for a chance to make his fortune. When an egocentric restaurateur offers Blake fame and fortune to produce an illegal delicacy for his exclusive network of secret supper clubs, Blake enters a gilded world. But when the foodies take their first bites of the illicit delicacy an ancient disease resurfaces, unleashing a trail of black death.
A shockingly real drama about how greed entices otherwise good people to make bad decisions, Poisoned Soil appeals to adult readers who enjoy realistic thrillers in the style of Stephen King. For readers who like Barbara Kingsolver’s agrarian prose and Garcia Marquez’s magical realism, Poisoned Soil weaves a rich Appalachian tapestry and brings the natural world to life through the eyes of a remarkable family held captive on cursed Cherokee land. A very relevant story in this day and age of TEOTWAWKI.

“Miss?”
Laurel McHargue
(32 Reviews)
Genre: Contemporary Fiction | Women’s Fiction
FREE for a limited time
“Miss?,” a contemporary novel based on actual events, exposes—with no political correctness—the failure of our current educational system and issues that teachers in public schools across the nation today are too afraid to discuss openly for fear of recrimination.
Maggie McCauley—a feisty young Army veteran—believes that her new life in Denver as a 7th grade English teacher will be a breeze. She finds out quickly how very wrong she is through inept school administrators and a security guard who won’t take no for an answer and ultimately resorts to violence.
Maggie struggles to cope with school officials mired in failed programs that may lead to school closure due to consistently poor student performance. Although the school’s principal believes in his new teacher, the assistant principal, Maggie’s chief nemesis, holds the power to influence her continued employment.
Socially, Maggie becomes involved with Grant, the gym teacher, but must deal with both the tragic memories of a past fiance and the inappropriate advances of Razz, the school’s security guard. In a fit of jealousy, Razz resorts to violence against Grant, and Maggie is drawn into the media spotlight because of her unique response to the school’s emergency lockdown. Only Harry, her WWII veteran neighbor, seems to be able to provide an outsider’s perspective and make Maggie laugh when all seems lost.
Despite the increasing probability that her school will close, Maggie continues to give her all to students who have never before experienced success. She must ultimately make a difficult life decision.

‘The Field of Blackbirds by Thomas Ryan is a gripping, fast paced thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat, as you continue to flip through the pages of the novel, unable to stop your need to know what is going to happen next. Set mostly within the volatile borders of Kosovo, the action and danger is believable and written in a knowledgeable way.
This book is great at interweaving international agencies and real life situations into the fabric of the story, creating an unnerving tale that bounces off of the pages as if you were right there running along the streets with Jeff and Morgan. Ryan does an excellent job describing the settings, and all of the characters are intricately developed, so that you are rooting for the heroes, and begging for the villains to receive the punishments they deserve. The Field of Blackbirds is an action packed thriller that you won’t want to put down.
