JAMES A. NEWMAN began writing fiction when he came out of rehab. He was addicted to pulp fiction. There was no cure. Before that he played guitar and sang in neu-gazer bands in London. Newman moved to Bangkok in the year 2001 and began writing fiction. He lived in ten-dollar hotel rooms and survived on chemical whiskey and raw luck. Newman has published over fifty short stories in various publications all over the world; most recently for Big Pulp Magazine. He has been included in many anthologies. His novel BANGKOK EXPRESS appeared in 2010. The sequel RED NIGHT ZONE was published shortly after. A collection of his short stories THAILAND AFTER DARK document his short story ventures. Other titles include LIZARD CITY a pulp horror novella and the novel ITCHY PARK to be published in 2014 with Blood Moon Press. His interests include noir fiction, crime, sex, jazz, beer Leo, Charles Bukowski, and travelling around on Bangkok buses dreaming about the oncoming apocalypse. Newman is also a playwright, screenwriter, publisher, editor, director, and live musician.

The White Flamingo: A Review

James A. Newman has done it again! The White Flamingo, the 3rd in the Joe Dylan series, is a gripping gritty noir mystery that takes the reader on a dark ride through the alleyways of Fun City.

Pattaya, Thailand can be drawn in many ways. But none can outdo the grimy portrait presented in James' latest work. The novel begins at a crime scene. A young bargirl is shown brutally murdered. Her dismembered body spread liberally across the billiards table on which she lay. It is a gruesome sight. And it is a sight! Newman writes the scene so expertly that the images quickly come together in your mind. They are not easily dislodged.

This is the beauty of The White Flamingo. We see a writer coming into his own and taking complete control of the talent that lies at his fingertips. After the brutal murder comes a simple observation: "He guessed that the wrong guy would be locked up. The wrong guy was always locked up in Fun City. If somebody cared about the wrong guy, they would pay The Detective to find the murderer...It was the way things rolled in a city where corruption wasn't a kink in the system: it was the system."

Rich, gritty descriptions stud the action and paint a vivid picture of the corrupt city of the story. Detective Joe Dylan slogs through the haze of his own brokenness and addiction, and we can't help but wonder if he will manage to overcome his personal demons in time to solve the case...

This book is a great noir detective page turner. My only fault with it is the shallow one sided presentation of Thai culture but then again one does not read this kind of book to be enlightened but rather to be entertained and is does a great job at that. In many way this kind of fiction is a lost art but one that James Newman does well to resurrect.

I enjoyed reading this. It's a difficult plot to follow in places, very fast pace and a very unique writing style, but an enjoyable story and I will look out for more from the author.

I liked the way all the characters all had major problems but I would of liked the writer to of developed them more. The book was a good read but sometimes the story jumped around a bit and while the basis of the characters was good their weaknesses were not developed as well as they might of been to create a more entertaining read.
