The story follows our protagonist Ryan in two timeframes: as an awkward somewhat lost schoolboy and as a disillusioned corrupt police officer.
From a dysfunctional family with a terrible secret the deck is stacked against Ryan and he falls into petty drug pushing.
Contrasting this is his discovery of a saxophone, through the playing of which he transcends his everyday worries. He finds high school first love in Denise. But this relationship his hampered by his clandestine drug pushing and necessary lying.
The drugs lead him into unsavoury company even murder. To say more would be too revealing.
I didn’t learn anything new, but the book kept my interest.

The story's protagonist is pushing 40 and is in a downward spiral. The action flashes back and forth between the present situation and the protagonist's high school days, which he focuses on as the place where events and choices started the slide. The two time frames are neatly linked up as the story resolves, and the reader and the protagonist both realize that the threads reach back even farther in time and are more involved than we first believe.
I keep calling him the protagonist and not the hero, because he is, for the most part, not likeable. He's crude and he's incredibly self-centered (which is somewhat more foregivable in the HS section of the story.) But he's very believable, and the reader feels for him, even at his lowest moments. There is a redemptive possibility in the conclusion, though it's only partially realized.
It's a very impressive first novel. (And is free of the typos and bad grammar that are the bane of indie publications.)
