Hour of the Wolf (English Edition) Formato Kindle
2 A.M. The hour of the wolf. You wake up filled with regrets, and haunted by dashed dreams, wondering what went wrong.
For Paul Lipton, a successful lawyer in his sixties, his mind’s howling in the darkness reminded him that time was slipping away. Perhaps partly because both his parents had died when they were young, and because he had already experienced his own severe health crisis, he wanted to be sure to live each day to the fullest. He decided he would start viewing each day afresh and in the now as a do-over, each night dying and each morning being reborn. His philosophy was to say, “I am me today,” and ask, “How do I choose to live in the now?”
His solution to these sleepless nights became an adventure, and an experiment in ageless living.
To silence the howls of the wolf, Lipton took off in the footsteps of his fictional hero, Larry Darrell in W. Somerset Maugham’s novel The Razor’s Edge. His journey took him first to the Himalayas. He then continued his external and internal travels that included crossing the ice fields of Mont Blanc, a shamanic retreat at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, and motorcycle adventures across Florida's Alligator Alley, the Rocky Mountains, and the back roads of North Carolina. In the process, he discovered he was not a prisoner of the past. His changed perspective had given him a new lease on life.

"Although we may think someone will come to save us, in the end, we know it is our choice and our action alone that will decide our destiny."
"If you ever wonder what to do, always consider what the warrior would do, then act with courage."

However, every now and then some aspect of the book would come into my mind and get me thinking about his search. So, I re-read the book and took it slower and tried to get some personal meaning from it. I understand that the author had some personal experiences involving the importance of one day over another which had a long lasting influence on him. After recognising the value of each day Lipton identifies 5 factors in life that he feels should never be ignored if we are serious about really living fulfilling and meaningful lives: Health, Family and friends, Learning, Spirituality and Fun. He explains how and why each one of these aspects should be incorporated into a well lived day. While I agree that they are important, Lipton may have missed the point that they are also long term investments requiring commitment and personal input which extend beyond simply making the most of each day. In one part of the book, he says he hears God saying," Remember to enjoy the day. Find the joy in the moment. spend your time wisely." but he often seems to struggle with the simplicity of this and keeps digging away to find greater meaning. He does ask an important question though, about how to live in the real world once you come back from the quietness of a retreat and the luxury of quiet thought.
If you lack Paul Lipton's financial resources or perhaps his tenacity for the personal quest, universal truths on living a purposeful life can also be found in any religious text or any good translation of the Tao Te Ching. If you can't afford the time or money for retreats to find your inner self books by Louise L. Hay or similar writers will help you find your authentic self. William Martin, Taoist writer and scholar in his book "30 days of Tao: Learning to Live at Ease in an Uneasy world." states "If these three things; empathy, interest and enjoyment are allowed to arise and fall in a natural flow, a well-lived day follows without effort or strain. Life lives itself:..". Many other well known writers and philosophers have detailed their findings in the search for meaning. It is the existences of these books and experiences that had me scratching my head at the intensity of Paul Lipton's search - almost as if he expected a different outcome. Paul Lipton has perhaps come from a more personal angle but reached many of the same conclusions. I have given the book 4 stars because it has made me think, research and question the way I value each day. Perhaps the personal quest, so central to Paul Lipton's book (and maybe his life) is the important thing after all.
