A simple story, beautifully told. The reader can feel the tension within the family, the jealousy of Fleming, the embarrassment of the father as he is forced to sit in the back of the wagon, the stoicism of Grayson, the positivity and fairness of Fiona. The secondary characters add depth to the story, each one equally well written.
Fiona is forced to take a teaching job in an unknown town in Michigan, far away from the home she has known in Chicago, boarding with an unknown family. Rose, the matriarch rules her house with a rod of iron, her sons and husband no real match for her. There are divisions within. Rose favours one son, having no time for the other. Into this mix steps Fiona.

Lovely, Sweet Romance

This was a sweet, simple romance. It didn't have any graphic writing or long, drawn out love scenes. There was no misunderstanding, lost love, or other mysterious piece from the past that popped up later in the book like so many romances seem to have lately. It was just a really lovely story about two people falling into love and finding their happy ever after. The characters were honest and simple. I know I keep coming back to simple, but the truth is that it was. I didn't have to think too hard while reading this book, to keep all of the plot lines and people straight. I downloaded this book because it was free but I will be purchasing more books from Ruth Ryan Langan because I LOVE her writing style.

It's the first time I leave a comment to a book... but this has been a really good read. I didn't expect anything, I even forgot that I had it downloaded on my kindle. When I started reading I expected just another romance novel. But I think of it as more than that. I love the characters and even though there's no big surprise how the story will end there were a lot of nice, unexpected stories in between. About two people falling in love and a just not so perfect family.. I couldn't read it at one time because of lack of time, but if I had had the time to do so, I wouldn't have let it down a single second!! Love it! Thanks to the author. I'm already deciding on the next book of her, hoping to get purchase another great book!!

A Really Nice Story

I enjoyed this story. I was drawn to it because I live in northen Michigan, but not as far north as the setting for this story. I read over half the book in one day. I woke up the next morning and it hit me that the author had Fiona taking a train through Michigan to her destination. But the setting was in the upper peninsula, and they never took a ferry. In 1890 as well as today, you would need to take a train through Chicago and then go north through Wisconsin if you want to travel all the way by train. Just a little detail that made me think. And it was set in the U.P. because one character tells Fiona that the stream/river goes into (Lake) Superior. I

I agree that the detailed chapter when they finally admit their feelings and have sex was not necessary to the story line. And that is why I took a star away. But the people who are refusing to read it because of chapter?? They are missing a nice book and story, just because they do not want to turn the pages to get beyond the part they do not like!! That is what I have done since learning to read as a child. The story was good and I enjoyed it.

by this nostalgic tale. Although it ultimately led to the expected happy ending, there were enough plot twists and turns to make it an interesting read. The contrast in the two brothers' personalities, the secret of their parents' strange estrangement, the lady teacher's gentle attempt to become part of a new community by helping both its weakest and (supposedly) strongest links; each new development was crafted in vibrant language that took me back to the stories of the rainy Saturday afternoon of my childhood.
