The Medici Iris (English Edition) Formato Kindle
Wes Barino has problems. Problems with his job, his money, his girl and his head. His life is steadily going nowhere, and the only breaks in the monotony are the nights of mayhem he shares with his screwball best friend, Scott, and creaming unsuspecting challengers at Quiztouch, a barroom trivia game.
But through seemingly random and ridiculous circumstances, Wes gets sucked into a bizarre spiral of events involving everything from the mafia, drug trafficking, crooked cops and the crime-ridden streets of Newark, to trivia championships, strippers, an order of monks . . . and the Medici Iris, an exotic flower that has no business blooming in Wes's scraggly back yard.
The iris brings Wes closer to his hidden, ancient Medici heritage, a bloodline that has imbued him both with amazing cognitive powers and a nasty seizure disorder. Sought for centuries, this unique red iris is a priceless link to the Italian family, and is the inspiration that Wes needs to change the course of his life, albeit with possibly fatal results!
As the maelstrom of events swirls around him, accelerating to the climax, Wes realizes that he must protect the precious iris and win the Quiztouch championships, despite getting himself caught in a federal racketeering sting. The arrests of the Jersey City and Hoboken mayors put a target on Wes Barino’s back as he flees across the country with a bag of evidence, the last of the iris rhizomes and the longshot chance of winning the Quiztouch Championships.
Can Wes survive? Will the mafia catch him? The FBI? Crime doesn’t pay, but gardening might…
The Medici Iris is a darkly humorous, character-driven novel with a few forays into murder, drug trafficking, sex…and horticulture.

Once you pass through the in-depth introductions, the story really starts to spin and captivate you. One moment you're at a bar watching Wes compete in a Quiztouch competition, the next you're driving through the streets of Newark. You wake up in the backyard to discover a red Iris, then suddenly you're meeting monks that insist on being part of your existence. You find yourself traveling with Wes and Scott on their crazy adventures while attempting to make it to the Quiztouch championship.
I am from New Jersey, and was easily able to recognize many places that are mentioned throughout the story. Though I have yet to visit The Presby Memorial Iris Gardens, I was able to vividly picture myself there because of the author's attention to detail and ability to transform words into a mental image. He clearly paints a picture of each person and place he mentions.
You can tell the author wanted his reader to fall into this story. He must have been captivated by these characters as he got to know them in creation. Not every author puts this much heart in development of characters. Where it can be viewed as a flaw, it can also be seen as a strength. Because of the detailed development, you just have to keep reading to find out what becomes of your new friends. I was unable to stop reading this book until I knew where their stories traveled.

And the author did not say it, but he was definitely writing about Operation Bid Rig, when the FBI arrested all of these Jersey mayors and rabbis a couple of years ago, so that part seemed very real. Dirty Jersey politics are stranger than fiction.
Definitely worth a read!

The sex and drugs were wild, but honestly there could have been more sex. KonaMan, the drug-dealer was very believable, as were the other characters. No spoilers, but Wes' relationships could have been developed a bit more - I wanted more info at the end - or maybe just a different ending.
The mystery of the green duffle bag and the complexity of the different story lines kept me engrossed. I was truly surprised when everything was revealed. And the O'Rourke character was superb- very realistic as the dirty cop and villain - I loved to hate him!
This book is fast-paced and fun. This Max Medford does a great job with character development. Very different from what I normally read, but highly recommended.

NOT a cookie-cutter story. So much goes on and somehow it all gets tied together in the end. I can't describe it as a thriller or a comedy or an action, adventure - it really has all of these elements and even a romance and touch of the supernatural with monks. It felt like I was reading about this guy's real life, but too many whacky things happen for it to be real.
The main character is awesome and at the end you're like `Go Wes Go!" when he's at the final trivia contest and all of those people are after him. Its almost like its movie in your head. I really loved it

It has all the elements of a page-turner - mysteries and intrigues, heroes and villains, and a dash of romance too. Nicely paced, fast-moving storyline with delightful twists that had me laughing out loud at times.
A scintillating and well-crafted story that keeps you wanting to know what happens next. A fun read.
