Brian Freyermuth is a writer and game designer with twenty years of experience in the video-game industry. He's gone from working on Fallout: A Post-Apocalyptic Adventure to designing and writing for such hits as Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, WWE All Stars, and the WGA Video Game Writing Award nominee Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two.

Currently working as lead content designer for Xaviant, Freyermuth lives in Georgia, where he lives with his wife Juliet and their son. He is also a member of the Horror Writers Association, and enjoys playing video games, board games, and role-playing games, as well as taking his camera on nature walks.

“I wish. Spending my hard-earned cash on dancers and cheesy shows sounds like paradise compared to the mess I’m in.” The minivan swerved to miss a slow-moving Honda, and my ribs began a riotous argument with my stomach. I gasped.
“Compared to the crap you’re always in,” Jake grumbled. “I thought you retired.”
“I keep trying to tell the monsters that. They won’t listen.”

The Good

Nick St. James is my type of hero. He’s far from perfect, isn’t all powerful yet he knows how to win. He’s the guy you root for just wanting something to go right and not blow up in his face. I personally really enjoy the detective style books involving the super natural. Plus there is plenty of action to go along with an entertaining story.

The Bad

The bad for me would be lots of interesting characters popping up throughout the book that I would love to get to know better. But if this leads to follow up books where I get to learn more about them count me in.

The Romance

While the romantic overtones are there between our hero and a young woman named Thelma, Nick is still haunted by the death of his true love Ann.

Conclusion

If you enjoy action and supernatural with an imperfect hero, then you will love this book. The main demon Nick fights with is new and interesting. I had little problem breezing through this one. It’s really a hard book to put down.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. If you're a fan of Simon R Green, Jim Butcher and others like them, Freyermuth should be right in your wheelhouse. The story is interesting, though I will say that I was a little concerned over the first 50 pages or so because it wasn't quite grabbing my attention. Then some of the secondary characters like Jake and Thelma were introduced and it really started to take off. My biggest complaint, and it probably cost the book a 5-star rating, is that I just didn't understand enough about the hero. He's called a Sundancer or some such thing, but why? What are his powers and how did he get them? It felt like there were several chapters of significant back story that really needed to be in the book to help me understand a little more about how the protagonist does what he does. Maybe it's the author's intention to reveal that later on, but for me it should have been part of this book. Still, if there is a follow-up to this novel I will definitely pick it up.

I read quite a bit, mostly indie books, and this one turned up on my Recommended list. Even though the cover and the description did nothing for me, when I saw that the author had been a writer for Interplay and had worked on Fallout, I was sold.

To my delight, the book was enormously entertaining. Some of the other reviews make a comparison to Green and Butcher. This is much better. It has a tight plot, good pacing, a lot of action. I do wish the supporting cast had gotten more development, but perhaps the next book will give them more time and add a bit of romance. I am looking forward to the next one.

Buy the book. You will not regret it.

I liked the story fairly well. I'm not 100% sold on things,but if/when the second book comes out I expect I will pick it up to see how things go. Book got 4 stars because it was a bit more depressing then I prefer. It also walked on the edge of an issue with some stories that I find frustrating. I've seen it a lot in the urban fantasy, where the protagonist always seems to succeed via luck or win by the smallest margin. I don't mind that if we see it in the climatic battle at the end, it's kind of expected. But if every conflict the character gets into is like that, it gets frustrating for me. However Demon Dance wasn't quite to that point, it was closer to it then I prefer though, and I will have to see how the next book goes, if there is one.

All in All I liked the book though, hence the 4 stars.

Every great detective novel (even if rooted in the supernatural) would be nothing without some great similes or metaphors. This book does not disappoint. The main character was well written ... we learn a lot about this character in each chapter, but he still has his secrets. I enjoyed the ride, but found that the case our character (Nick St. James) was intent on pursuing was something that I may have read in the past. It didn't seem fresh.. and at some point I felt like the parts of the puzzle didn't fit together well once everything was uncovered. I would have liked a story that didn't seem so forced... mayhaps we'll get that in the next book.

Other than these small quibbles, I would definitely purchase the next installment once it hits the shelves. I liked the character and I want to find out why Nick is referred to as "Sundancer." Yeah... he has some weird powers ... but we don't know the origin nor are we given a meaning behind his nickname. I'm willing to read more novels to unravel the mystery that is Nick .... while he's busy solving mysteries for others. Freyermuth is a good author and I eagerly await Nick's next case.
