Painted Faces (English Edition) Formato Kindle
Dublin native Freda Wilson considers herself to be an acquired taste. She has a habit of making offensive jokes and speaking her mind too often. She doesn't have the best track record with first impressions, which is why she gets a surprise when her new neighbour Nicholas takes a shine to her.
Nicholas is darkly handsome, funny and magnetic, and Freda feels like her black and white existence is plunged into a rainbow of colour when she's around him. When he walks into a room he lights it up, with his quick wit and charisma. He is a travelling cabaret performer, but Freda doesn't know exactly what that entails until the curtains pull back on his opening night.
She is gob-smacked and entirely intrigued to see him take to the stage in drag. Later on, Nicholas asks her if she would like to become his show assistant. Excited by the idea, she jumps at the chance. Soon she finds herself immersed in a world of wigs, make-up and high heels, surrounded by pretty men and the temptation of falling for her incredibly beautiful employer.
In this story of passion and sexual discovery, Nicholas and Freda will contend with jealousy, emotional highs and lows, and the kind of love that only comes around once in a lifetime.
**Not suitable for younger readers. Contains some strong language and scenes of a sexual nature.**

Favorite Quote: "We all paint on a face to show the world. For some of us, it quite literal"
Review:
I've read this book before and after Bohemian Rhapsody (again) I was in the mood for this book. This is a very unconventional love story and it won't be everyone's cup of tea.
I liked it because no matter what it's a good love story, it shows you that in order to have a good relationship you need to accept the person you're with. All of it, not just the pieces you like. And in some cases you need a bit of an open mind.
What is this book about:
This book is about Dublin girl Freda, or Fred as she likes to be called. She is a witty, sassy, kind of girl with a mouth on her that can be used as a weapon.
One day after she gets home from work she meets her new neighbor Nicholas, a beautiful man, who introduced himself as Vivianne, or Viv. She thought he was just messing with her, and that he just pulled that name out of thin air, but that wasn't the case. After going to the club Nicholas works in, she finds out that he is a drag queen. She can't help but be intrigued in this man. She wants to get to know him, become his friend. She never expected him to be as into her as she is in him. That he could possible want her, all of her.
What did I like about this book:
I liked the characters. I liked their chemistry. I liked that the story is so well rounded. I found it really interesting to learn more about Nicholas and Freda.
I can really relate to freda, she isn't a size 0 and while she is at easy with her body, she still has insecurities.
Rating:
5 amazing Stars

Este é um livro diferente.
Bem diferente.
E eu me apaixonei!

Where do I begin? Well, the author is beyond talented as a writer. Her style is fluid, easy to read, and the tone or mood s balanced perfectly between the light and funny and the darker aspects of this story. This author has serious storytelling ability.
I was reluctant to read this book despite glowing reviews all over the place. (Ha! Just like Beautiful Disaster.). Maybe I couldn't quite picture a hero as a drag queen. Or maybe it was the threat of yet another smart-mouth, snarky heroine that had me pushing this back down my Kindle TBR list. After all, it just couldn't work, right? Oh, I was so very wrong.
Yes, Nicholas is a drag queen. He loves to dress in women's clothes and performs as Vivica Blue. And he us definitely heterosexual. He's very much into women but not into long-term relationships. He is beautiful as the man Nicholas or as the woman Vivica Blue. He began by dressing in his mother's clothes to feel close to her after she died, but that need to feel close to her was transformed into a security issue when something awful happened to him as a teenager. He is damaged, charming, imperfect, funny, and electrifying. Nicholas jumped off the page from the beginning and kept me riveted to the last.
Freda is not model thin or outrageously beautiful. What she is, is funny, sharp witted, opinionated, at times offensive because she says what she thinks. She doesn't go around with blinders on about the human race, and she's as honest with herself as she is with others. "The art of laziness is something I perfected many years ago. Often it's nice to just sit back and be a spectator for other people's love lives. I might not have a boyfriend, but I have cupcakes, and those tasty bastards haven't let me down yet."
She is also quite cynical and is handy with put downs and witty comebacks. She has issues with her self image, but it doesn't paralyze her. Fred is also hardworking, loyal to a fault, and open minded. Oh, did I say she is funny? Oh my yes. I loved her sense of humor. I loved how she used humor to keep herself grounded. Even though she is self-deprecating and critical of herself, she is not wallowing in pity. She is living her life and isn't hiding because of her issues. Fred sums it up nicely: "Needless to say, my insecurities are crippling; I'm just really good at hiding them."
When these two meet, the chemistry or spark or tension (whatever term you'd like to use) is electric. These two were absolutely perfect for each other. It's corny, but the complete each other in ways no one else can. I loved each and every interaction between Fred and Viv or Freda and Nicholas - from the budding friendship, to the laughter, to the tears, to the arguments or rows as Fred calls them. And I wanted more. They become friends before they are lovers. They actually get to know each other, and that was refreshing. As Nicholas tells Fred: "You're the perfect friend for me Fred, you the drag king and me the drag queen."
I loved Nicholas eccentricity, his different-ness (is that a word?). It shows up in his act as Vivica Blue. It shows up in where he lives and the things he puts in his home. For example: in his living area is lime green velvet chaise longue and red feather cushion. Fred says that it resembles a "boudoir that's decorated in a mix of outlandish psychedelic colours and old world vintage". I laughed at the image, but I saw it perfectly in my mind.
Nicholas is rich enough to afford to live in a better section of Dublin, but chooses the run down old building in a bad neighborhood. He explains it by saying: "I've always tended to select my living spaces in older buildings, places that feel lived in are oddly reassuring to me." To which Fred replies in her trademark humor: "If by lived in you mean an aged whore with cracked skin and some sort of downstairs infection she can't get rid of, then you're right, this building has plenty of character."
When their attraction builds, Freda wonders "Am I attracted to the man behind the costume? Or do I want the man in the costume? It's hard to tell. I think I like the entire package." That's what I loved about her. She is not afraid to examine her feelings and motivations.
Nicholas bares his past to Fred: Every woman is different," he explains. "Some of them make you feel satisfied, others make you feel high, most just make you feel used and dirty, but you Fred, you make me feel cleansed." How can you not be moved by that one statement? When he disappears for several days, Freda finds him holed up in his apartment in a blue funk. He explains that he is "either happy or I'm sad Fred, there's no middle ground with me." It's clear he has bipolar disorder or manic depression. He is so complex and many layered and 100% fascinating.
One of the most moving statements is when Nicholas tells Freda that "We all paint on a face to show the world." The point at which Freda realizes she loves Viv/Nichoas was another: "I love him because he makes me laugh when I don't feel like laughing. I love him because he challenges my view of what a man is. I love him because I know I shouldn't love him and that he'll break my heart. I love him because he's a complete and total anomaly. I love him because I want to kill the sadness inside him more than I want anything else in the world."
And then when he tells her that he loves her, i just cried.
"I love you, Freda. (. . . ) It feels like nobody in the history of the world has loved another person as much as I love you. I love you so much it hurts. You make me smile, you make me laugh, you make me burn.
(. . .)
I belong to you. I've belonged to you since the beginning, since before I even knew that I did."
I will never forget the part when Nicholas serenades Freda at the festival, from Elbow's "One Day Like This":
What made me behave that way?
Using words I never say
I can only think it must be love
Oh anyway, it's looking like a beautiful day
Someone tell me how I feel
It's silly wrong, but vivid right
Oh, kiss me like a final meal
Yeah, kiss me like we die tonight
Painted Faces is not a good book. It is an excellent book. It is an unforgettable book that moved me and made me think about labels and stereotypes and what makes a hero. Go buy and read this book. You won't regret it.
