L'autore

Lindy Boone Michaelis was born into an entertainment environment as the second daughter of singer/entertainer Pat Boone and grew up in Beverly Hills, California. She and her family toured all over the U.S. and internationally. The Boone Girls recorded several Christian albums, including the Grammy award nominated "First Class." Lindy is wife to Mike and mother to Ryan, Jessica, and Tyler. On June 19, 2001, Lindy's life changed forever. Her oldest son Ryan stepped through a skylight on the roof of his apartment building and fell three stories to the concrete below. For the last 10 years she has learned a lot about traumatic brain injury (TBI) as well as understanding the faithfulness of God during our deepest need. The Boone family started a foundation in Ryan's name, called Ryan's Reach, to help survivors of brain injury and their families.

The grandson of Pat Boone, Ryan Corbin, fell through a skylight and landed on a cement floor several stories down. The doctors gave him little chance of survival and if he did survive, he had virtually no chance for a normal life. Instead of listening to the reports of these doctors, his mother and father chose to believe God, to speak words of healing, pray, and fight for Ryan's total recovery. His grandparents and family pulled together in faith, and miracles began to occur. As time went by Larry King invited the family to share their faith and challenges on TV - this touched the hearts of many and led to millions praying for Ryan. Ryan knows that God has something special planned for his life. I believe it. Lindy Boone Michaelis shared her story with honesty and transparency. She shares the challenges, the hope, and the difficulties of maintaining her faith and positive outlook in the midst of sometimes depressing diagnosis. I appreciated hearing the verses she used to inspire her faith, and how the church family helped. Eleven years is a long haul to maintain faith, but God came through and gave Lindy a peace that passes all understanding in the midst of this storm. She chose to believe God, not become angry at Him. I am sure that choice made all the difference in the world to the recovery of this brave young man. If you are facing a challenge in your life or need inspiration and a boost to your faith, read this memoir. It blessed me. I also am believing for a complete recovery for Ryan - imagine what He can do with the play he wrote, with his testimony, and that wonderful smile that Lindy says Ryan has.

Ryan Corbin, a young man with everything going for him, fell three stories onto cement, incurring so much bodily damage his survival was questionable. Experience the shock and horror his mother, Lindy, went through as she relates the sudden shift from an idyllic lifestyle to a living nightmare. Ryan's survival was the focus when Pat Boone, Ryan's grandfather, and Lindy went on Larry King Live to ask his viewers for prayer. Millions prayed, God heard and Ryan's life was spared.

A long struggle lay ahead to believe God for Ryan's healing in spite of the doctors' limiting prognosis. Heaven Hears is the story of his progress, along with a transparent account of Lindy's ups and downs and her growth in faith. How the family turned bad into good is the moral of this story and encouragement for people of faith to believe God for more and see His answers to their prayers.

I've been interested in the Boone family ever since I saw a picture of Pat Boone on the cover of TV Guide in the fifties (I was around 9 or 10) and asked my mom the name of the handsome man. I read Pat Boone's book A New Song which he wrote after he recommitted himself to Christ. I've been curious about his family and what it was like growing up in not only a famous family but a famous Christian family. So Lindy opens up a little about her family life which was very interesting to me. She stresses that her life was very easy in comparison with what she had to deal with when her 24-year-old son Ryan had his horrific accident.

I read this book in one sitting (well I just stopped for dinner). The fact that Ryan can actually pray and talk about wanting to serve the Lord after the traumatic brain injury he suffered is amazing, inspiring, and a testament to the power of prayer. I felt as though I were at his bedside suffering along with his mom and family members. Lindy doesn't gloss over the brain injury and its impact on a family. She reveals the parts that are scary and unappealing--the inappropriate anger that brain injuries can cause (somewhat like Tourette Syndrome), the terrible depression that can descend upon the caregivers, and the distance from family that a caregiver faces when devoting her time to the injured one, to name three challenges faced by the Boone family.

I will be honest and say that, despite the fact that I am a Christian, I could have done with far fewer Biblical stories--only because when I'm reading anyone's story I get very impatient with digressions. Don't tell me about the research you've done. Don't give me the history of anything. Just stay with what happened and how you felt. Of course, I realize that for a Christian the Bible will probably be key in overcoming problems. I wish I could say that the Biblical stories inspired me. But I just wanted to hear about the saints in this story--Shirley Boone certainly could qualify as a modern-day saint--the way she kept vigil at Ryan's bedside night and day. I loved hearing about how they all gathered at the hospital, sleeping on the floor many nights.

All in all, it's a beautiful story, and I will pray that Ryan continues to progress. He is truly an inspiration. To hear about him crossing the room with his walker, a sweaty mess when he was through, moved me and I'll think about him when I have the inevitable challenges of a 67-year-old arthritic woman.

A book truly worth reading!!

I saw Lindy and her dad, Pat Boone, and her sister, Debbie Boone, on the Today Show where they were talking about this book and yes, I have to admit that Pat and Debbie were the reason I watched the segment, but after a few minutes I just knew I had to read the book. It is about what happens to a family after a member of the family has a catastrophic accident. Having had to deal with a similar situation in our family what Lindy says about it is true and while I wasn't there for the worst of our situation, what Lindy had to say about her situation was much like what my family went through it wasn't funny. After reading the book I bought two more copies to give to friends because it was that good!!!
