Unsettling events pile up one after another: animal corpses appear on the front porch each night, an abandoned graveyard in the North Carolina woods is now home to something unnatural, and wooden men with eerily familiar faces are spotted lurking in the nearby town of Halfway.

Abe finds himself caught in a game set in motion long before the rise of mankind. A game in which even the Devourer was merely a pawn and where losing means the death of every man, woman, and child on earth.

Standing with him are the survivors of Belmont: Anne, Chuck, Leon, and his old squadmate, Henry "The Professor" Monroe. Together they intend to hold the line against the encroaching darkness and prove that there are still things in the light to be feared.

It was well written in general, had a tense story, and I liked the characters. Bad Radio was more instense, I liked this one too.

Really great concept of things, and while I read both of the "Fireteam zero" books, it would have been great to see the author continue with stories from when Abe and company were in WW2 and their exploits. Sad that the author seems to have stopped writing.

I read this in one sitting it was a fantastic book. It followed on from Bad Radio in which you learn about the main character and how he came to be and also about his those who are in his company. I love the train of thought focusing on magic in that it has always been present but due to the developement of man it has been quashed through time.

I think the imagination of the gods intervention and the use of more creatures to implement their return is great. The connection between this and the first book is clever as is the hint of the build up to the future. This saga of the tale allowed you to get closer to the minds and characters of others in the story such as anne and chuck. There were moments of humour, endearment and horror of what the physical consequences were.
I look forward to the next installment to see how the characters will further develop including the 'hunger' of abe and how he has changed and the impact this has.

Definitely recommend to anyone who is looking ahead to see if it is worth reading the first book this surpasses all my expectations.
