To Cleo’s horror, there’s a person-sized dent in Mama’s gray Olds. Mama denies killing Erica but refuses to account for her whereabouts that night. Mama’s secrets are maddening, but are they deadly?

I'd never read any of Maggie Toussaint's books before, so I had no idea what to expect when I began reading On the Nickel. I confess to being a reader who gets bored easily, but I'm happy to say Toussaint's mystery kept me entertained from beginning to end!

The heroine, Cleopatra Jones, is very likable. One of the qualities which I admire about her is an absolute devotion to her family. Included in that circle are not only her daughters and her feisty, funny mother, but also her pregnant Saint Bernard.

Not only did I want to know who murdered the town lady whom nobody seemed to like, but I also had to find out which guy the heroine would end up with: her ex-husband, or the new love interest.

I highly recommend On the Nickel as a great glimpse into family and hometown life, punctuated by humor and suspense.

Cleo's "MaMa" has been arrested for the murder of a women she didn't like and didn't get along with. Cleo is determined her mother couldn't hurt anyone let alone murder anyone no matter what. She sets her mind that she's going to find the real killer and prove her mother's innocence and keep her out of jail. It's not like Cleo doesn't have anything to do. She's an accountant running her own business. She's raising two girls as a single parent and has a pregnant dog that she got because no one else would take after her owner died (you have to read "In For a Penny" to get that story). "In For a Penny" is the first book in this series. She also has to frequently deal with her cheating ex-husband, Charlie, who wants her back, as well as her new boyfriend, Rafe, who keeps her confused. You never know what she's going to do or what's going to happen to her. Add in a sheriff, Britt, who has tunnel vision about a suspect (the first one he comes up with) and doesn't want her sticking her nose into his case. Put it all together and you get a really fun read, characters that will keep you guessing. Cleo's life is anything but predictable. You really need to read all three books in the series in order to get the most out of each book...the background for each book is in the book that precedes. I can't wait for the next book in the series to see what happens next. Each book ends like a cliff hanger!

Not one of my favorite books - would rate a 3.5 if we had the option. The mystery is fairly good and the characters are fairly well developed, just nothing that stands out. As another reviewer has commented the mystery wavered into a hot romance novel and back again to a mystery any number of times. The reading is quick and smooth, but you keep expecting more somehow. Only a so-so recommendation on this one.

The main character, Cleo, is a woman who is coming into her own. After being divorced, she is becoming the "new" Cleo. Her need to constantly remind herself that she is a new woman, endears her to the reader.

Her family situation is unenviable, but we know she loves her mother, her daughters, her friends, but not so much her ex-husband.

I know it is picky to say this, but more than one character said, "not hardly"--a double negative that is disconcerting if it isn't part of a character's personality.

This is a light read, with a good mystery and a little romance. I enjoyed it.
