Maya Lawton is a lonely prostitute living in this world.She gives birth to the first halfkinds, creatures who are half animal-kind, and half mankind. Since interspecies breeding is illegal,she is forced into seclusion and raises them alone. Then one day,without warning, she dies, and her death leads to their discovery.Abandoned and lost, this family of halfkinds plan to escape to a terraformed moon. But the law is after them. The order is to kill, sentby the highest authority, the United Species Alliance.

What separates the Halfkinds series from the rest isn't only its unique premise, but also its structure. Chapters shift between the first person POV's of key characters and are presented in a non-linear fashion in order to create a mounting suspense that will keep the reader riveted until the end. Various plot twists occur within the story, and the different character viewpoints help alter the tone as you go along to give an unbiased presentation of their motives and actions. The setting allows a diverse cast of characters, some human, many not, to send a message that intelligence is a power that we take for granted,and when given to other species, the world becomes a dangerous place.

An Entertaining and Unique Sci-Fi Read

The author creates a compelling universe in which animals and mankind are no longer separated by their intelligence, just their instincts. This story of a human commando and his team of sentient animal operatives on a mission to destroy a family of genetic "half-breeds" provides fast-paced action, interesting characters, and an impressive futuristic world in which lions wage war against gorillas in Africa, pigs lead a rebellion to liberate Australia, and frogs are considered on the low end of species class spectrum.

I especially enjoyed the characters of Tiago and Curtis. These two turned out to be much more complex characters than your average one-characteristic stereotypes and the author was able to successfully give each his own unique voice. Also unexpected, although not necessarily unwelcome, were the sudden storyline twists. No character is safe in this book and the reader is challenged to manage his expectations. The author did an admirable job of creating an engaging universe with an interesting backstory, which helps to overcome the initial shock of talking animals cross-breeding with humans.

The book picks up pace after the first couple of chapters. After Simon Trevor forms his interspecies team of highly trained operatives, it's one explosive fight after another as the half-kinds struggle to escape their clutches while dealing with the dissension and betrayal within their own family. Half-Kinds is definitely worth taking a look at and I look forward to Volume 2 providing an even more polished and stylized version of this entertaining universe.

I loved this book and couldn't put it down. The characters were great and the plot really gripped me. There were a lot of typos in the kindle version which I found a little irritating but maybe this is typical of Kindle editions? I wouldn't know as this was only the second Kindle book I've actually read. I got this version free from Amazon and immediately I finished it I rushed back to Amazon to buy the next two books in the series but I tbh I wish I had simply left it at this one as the next two books just didn't do much for me at all and I skipped over half of the third book to get to the end. I didn't like how the characters personalities changed as the books went on and found myself disliking them intensely, whilst finding the love interest a tad disturbing to say the least

Didn't start off thinking I would dig this anywhere near as much as I did. The story takes place in a strange but compelling dystopian-like atmosphere, but a totally original one where earth species have mutated off into various intelligent strains in the distant future.

The dialogue exchange is excellent throughout. Most of the book takes place "on stage" in live scenes, which lends itself well to first-person present-tense narrative. To be honest, I usually don't enjoy books told from that type of perspective. But this one was masterfully accomplished.

The story itself is a well-told mystery that blesses the sci-fi genre with its rare character interplay and plot intrigue. The identity of the protagonist didn't dawn on me for quite a while. The action really picks up in the middle of the book. I recommend this for futuristic robot-story lovers and old-school Alfred-Hitchcock mystery/suspense fans alike, even though on the surface the book seems like neither of those.

I didn't go five stars because I did have to make a bit of an effort at "suspending disbelief." That said, this author is a very good writer and the book has a professionally-edited feel. Planning on reading the next one.

The storytelling was very good, and the plot moved along nicely. Once I learned the characters names and "what" they were, the story was easier to read.

But in the end I just couldn't care less. I really had no sympathy for any of the characters. I think it had to do that there were so many of them and they all just died off so quickly. I couldn't learn to care about any of them before they died.

It's an ok book if you've got some time to spend, but it could have been so much more.

How does it feel to spend your whole life underground with your family, with your siblings and your prostitute mother ? Hiding away, knowing that if the world outside discovers you, they will destroy you just for existing. These 11 siblings are half human half animal, results of a series of scientific experiments who have to go on the run once their mother dies. In this future earth Dogs, Cats, Lions, Wolves, Elephants have caught up with human evolution and can talk, think, rationalise and hate, just like human beings !
Not everyone survives as they are hunted down. I really enjoyed the characters and their personalities. The basic premise is family and ties and how messed up they can be. Im halfway through the sequel and riveted.
