Mark and Kelly Turner are what many call “average Americans”. Their childhoods were spent in small Texas towns with summers at their grandparent’s farms. Follow the Turner’s as they plan their strategy to voluntarily move from an upper middle-class lifestyle to a self-sustaining lifestyle on an Oklahoma farm before it is too late. Learn alongside them as they learn the skills needed to live on a small farm, raise their own food, and prepare for a global economic depression on a scale never seem by mankind before.

Randy has a large variety of experiences dealing with Microsoft SQL Server over the past 20 years and has worked with environments with Terabytes of data and environments that have over a 40,000 databases with only a few megabytes of data in each database. In the past Randy has specialized in training and consulting with a focus on topics pertaining to performance tuning, SQL Server hardware infrastructure design and configuration, and SQL Server capacity planning. Randy is the author of TransactSQL Language Reference Guide, coauthor of MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Implementation and Maintenance (Exam 70-431) and numerous magazine and newsletter articles pertaining to SQL Server and has spoken at various international and national conferences. Currently, Randy is a database administrator with Green Mountain Coffee Roasters in Williston, Vermont. He lives in Milton, VT with his wife Judy and their three dogs.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. While the main characters make much more than I do (they're prepping for a worst-case "minimum wage" lifestyle which is where I'm starting from), the situations they find themselves in and the new ways they have to look at their lifestyle, budgeting, spending and consuming ring very true. There are a lot of questions about what is really important in the characters' lives versus the "what should we buy next" mentality our society has way too much of. The story moved along quickly enough to be thoroughly engaging and the political stuff, though it made the writer's viewpoint obvious, wasn't a verbal assault with a sledgehammer like a lot of prepper fiction. I will certainly buy the next book. BTW, thanks to the author for putting this out at a price point that didn't make me feel guilty for purchasing it!

This story was very thought provoking. While there is a lot of typing errors which became annoying, I found the book kept me gripped and I will be reading the next instalment. I read about peak oil years ago, and I know oil is running out. I am at heart trying to prepare for a future without oil but it's hard when my family think I am mad.

This is not your typical story. Most stories will have an introduction to the protagonists and antagonists, then there will be conflict, then resolution. This story doesn't really have antagonists, just a conflict with the circumstances.

There were some problems with improper word usage, worse instead of worst, and some grammar issues. It would have been helpful for him to use something other than spell check for editing. All in all it wasn't too bad and didn't make me too crazy. I could overlook it. Chances are I would make a few of the same mistakes too so don't take this criticism as anything but constructive.

Alright enough with the negative! I REALLY LIKED THIS BOOK AND CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE! This book will make you think. Even though it is non-typical it is a good read. I like the characters and their thought processes. If you buy this book you will enjoy it and most likely buy the second one.

i couldnt work out if this was a documentary style book, or a fiction book, based on the way it was written at the start. But soon turned into a fiction book which i mostly enjoyed. There was a lack of emotion in the characters though - the end of the world is coming and there were no hysterics?? However I have added the sequels to my wish list so this hasn't put me off.

Peak Oil tale with some scary realistic points

I admit it- I am a sucker for this kind of story, but I am also critical of authors who take the easy way out. For example, lazy writers often just gin up a sudden financial crisis out of the blue, or blame the "inevitable" slide on one political party or another for raiding the cookie jar (usually used as a hatchet job against folks of a certain political pursuasion). But I digress, and this story has none of those old, worn-out plots to drag it down. Instead, we get to watch as an upper middle class family, the Turners, confront the reality that the end of cheap fuel will be hitting soon and making their careers obsolete.

Mark and Kelly Turner have a wonderful life filled with expensive cars, costly vacations and a showplace home. All of it is financed to the hilt, and suddenly, Mark is smacked in the face about how superficial and phoney their lives have become. Fortunately, his wife Kelly can see the truth as well, and soon they are working to change their ways as parents, partners and a children to parents who raised them to be better. I won't give any spoilers (I hope), but the transformation takes them down new roads as they both also realize that the careers they have devoted so much time to over the past twenty years could disappear like a mirage evaporating in the desert.

I loved this book and these characters since as a parent to young children and in my early 40s myself, the lessons learned by Mark and Kelly resonate with me as well. How do you protect and raise your kids when the fianacial situation seems to be melting down at an accelerated rate? How do you make sure your kids have enough to eat every night? Or a place to sleep? All of these issues are presented here, and Mark and Kelly work together as true partners to address them. This book is full of useful tips for turning your finances around, simplifying your life and preparing for a fiancial meltdown. Also, as a bonus the farming and gardening details are useful and welcomed advice for those of us who dabble in the backyard, raised bed gardening.

Warning-This book is not a call to arms or a stroll through Mad Max fantasy world, so don't expect a lot of overt action as this family tries to set there future. If you are looking for that, maybe look elsewhere. However, the from what I can tell, the pending second book will feature some "confrontations" as the situation deteriorates.

I am anxious to get a chance to read the second volume of this well thought out series. Randy Dyess had become one of my new favorite up-and-coming authors.
