In the overcrowded, noisy and sweltering streets of New York, in the year 2060, paranoia, fear and poverty are everywhere. An energy crisis paved the way for a new political party that promised to solve the country’s problems. However, this administration quickly began enforcing dictatorial legislation that left anyone who opposed the government outcast from society; unable to get a job, cut off from the power and forced to survive on the streets.

Unsurprisingly, this led to riots and eventually, to the emergence of underground rebel factions. It’s the job of a task force known as the PeaceKeepers to bring these rebels to justice. Heller was one of the first recruited to the new department, but what he’d once idealistically seen as a worthy cause becomes a bitter pill to swallow when he is forced to shoot and kill an old college friend, Matthew Ballow, in the line of duty.

Now, Heller must find out about Ballow’s connection to the rebels and, more importantly, learn why he was prepared to risk his life for the cause. His job becomes that much more difficult when he meets a beautiful young journalist who is reporting on the case.

A beginning effort that could have been even more.

A cliche sketchy character story developed into a novella, that could have used better dialogue and plot substance to drive the book. The action did most of the work with it's page acion reminding the reader of Blade Runner and something like a futuristic cop gone renegade. The book has some character development work to help us know them better, without getting in the way of the non-stop action. Sometimes that becomes the rub in doing the story, where the plot skims along without any explanation of more about the reasons and background of everyone in the story. We continue to gain little knowledge, and as we move to the end, we just catch our breath as the story ends. Why did this happen and why did it have to happen at all? The pluses outweigh the minuses in this story as this appears to be his first effort. He can raise the bar even more in this genre, if he pays close attention to the story flaws by a even better effort. A little detail can go along way. So can he use some tight unstale or not worn out dialogue used before so many times. The mystery has to be eventually solved, and there has to be something besides the action to drive this unexplained plot onward. In the way the story ends, I gather there is another chapter of this 2060 On The Run. I will stay tuned only hoping to see a better second installment.

Only about 30 pages in length so really a novella, except that it's actually more like the opening chapters of a longer book. The scene is New York in 2060. The main character is a male policeman working for a corrupt government and searching for a missing data disc obtained by the 'resistance'. Enter a female reporter who, it turns out, is a member of the resistance. They fall for each other and our hero changes sides (very easily, it seems). They then run away, taking the data with them, pursued by more police who manage to shoot quite a few innocent bystanders in a desperate attempt to shoot them. They manage to jump on a train just leaving Grand Central station, safe for the moment but knowing the police "will stop at nothing till they get them - The End". Why end there? There was the possibility of the runaways having a whole series of adventures before coming to an end point, perhaps where good triumphs over evil but at least coming to some sort of conclusion. The writing style is unusual, being written in the third person present tense, and I felt uncomfortable with it at first. However, I was just getting used to the style and into the story when it suddenly stopped.

I loved it. I found this book by chance and I had a great time reading it. An interesting vision of the crisis (of where we are and where we could be!). Perfect for those who like Isaac Asimov and authors of this kind.

OK, so maybe the reference in the title is a bit obscure for the younger audience. All you need to know going in is that ya just don't mess with Heller; he'll put two in your back without giving it a second thought, then simply drink himself into a stupor to deal with the pain and make the voices in his head go away for awhile.

This is a short publication, that is quite well written. The characters are fleshed out nicely and the action is taut. In short, this book has left me looking forward to much more in this series...

Decent short story, a little difficult writing style as he struggles to manage first person present tense. Just when you get interested, the first chapter ends and the is no more. An artifact to sell but not satisfying enough to get me to buy. The bed part is descriptions of the future world. I might have given 4- stars for a true novel.
