L'autore

Olivia Boler is the author of two novels, YEAR OF THE SMOKE GIRL and THE FLOWER BOWL SPELL. Poet Gary Snyder described SMOKE GIRL as a "dense weave in the cross-cultural multi-racial world of complex, educated hip contemporary coast-to-coast America...It is a fine first novel, rich in paradox and detail." A freelance writer who received her master's degree in creative writing from UC Davis, Boler has published short stories in the Asian American Women Artists Association (AAWAA) anthology Cheers to Muses, the literary journal MARY, and The Lyon Review, among others. She lives in her native San Francisco.

I loved this book and just bought two more copies for friends. Set in San Francisco author Olivia Boler creates a page-turner mystery that I just couldn't put down. Memphis Zhang is the she-ro of this fantasy story, though the way Ms. Boler writes, you simply expect to meet the witches and fairies portrayed the next time you are out for a neighborhood stroll. I can't wait to read about Memphis Zhang's next wiccan adventure.

This book is magick!

This is a Fantasy story about magick and witches and I must admit/confess to having NEVER read a fantasy book before. This is not a genre that would be on my usual reading list and so I probably wouldn't have read this book if it hadn't been for the Eclectic Reading Challenge.

I cannot emphasise enough how much I got sucked into the world of Memphis Zhang. I was totally immersed in her story and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. With all the reviews I have written so far, I find it difficult to comment too much on the story or characters as I don't want to give anything away.

What I will say is that I BELIEVED the main protagonist. I felt she came alive on the page (of my Kindle) and I cared about what happened to her throughout the story. One of the character names in particular was a stroke of GENIUS and everyone we met on the journey was well drawn.

This is written in the first person and from the main protagonist's point of view. I enjoyed the story line and the humour that's injected into the narrative is spot on. I even broke my "not reading my Kindle on the bus" rule (I know it's a stupid rule) as I HAD to keep reading this book. I've said before I judge a good book on whether the story keeps popping into my mind, well days after finishing The Flower Bowl Spell, little snippets keep doing just that.

Olivia Boler is an author I *met* blogging. I read her posts on self-publishing her story and watched with interest as the cover design was unveiled and the publication drew ever closer. This is a journey that so many people are on and it is a journey I hope to make myself one day. This makes reading a book like this more important to me. It also inspires me to make sure I write reviews and help spread the word.

This was a top professional job. Great cover, well-edited and no errors to speak about. This book gives self-publishing a HUGE pat on the back. If every self-published book was to this standard then maybe the stigma attached to going it on your own would end right here and now.

I HIGHLY recommend reading this book. I look forward to reading Olivia's next book.

My first impression of The Flower Bowl Spell was that it was a good beach read! The realism of the story telling is enriched with detailed but casual accounts of real magic in our modern day world. Memphis's friendships and work are entertaining. Of course the appearance of a fairy shakes things up a bit. And then two girls show up unexpectedly and are for unknown reasons required to go along for the ride. My eyes started charging down the page trying to figure out what was coming next, but I could never quite guess. So it is a beach read. And it's a mystery. And it's a delightful journey with pop stars, elegant restaurant owners, and a magic 3 year old. Enjoy the ride!

I was going to be more generous with my stars here but I read the latest Patricia Briggs' book since I read this and realized I should instead be more honest. The book has an interesting premise but it moves at a snails pace - for example the heroine sees a fairy on a rat in the subway...and thinks about it for, say, two months while nothing else much happens. The relationship with the older man is nebulus throughout. The twisty turns are far between and oddly emotionless. There's an entire scene where she is ran down in the projects and trapped in a laundry room and you never get a real sense of urgency about it. It's like the author is not *there* with her characters, and she is telling not showing. There's also a deus ex machina rescue which I hate.

The idea of the story is very unique and imaginative, so I hope the author can immerse herself in her character's feelings and reactions and draw the reader into the story - (and recommed reading Mercy Thompson as an example.) And edit, edit, edit!!

I thought that maybe the self removed feeling of the narrator/heroine was due to the fact that the author is attempting magical realism? But it really didn't work for me. And with plot points this could, this could have been a great book.

Lovely book with a mystery including witches and fairies.
There is light suspense whilst the protagonist tracks down who is trying to perform the spell.
Held my attention throughout and a great weekend read.
This is a standalone book not part of a series, although I did check if the author had any other Kindle books available when I had finished this one. (not at the moment)
Writing and editing solid. No problems with display or formatting.
Some adult concepts, recommend for 16+ yrs
