I like being able to get engrossed with the characters and see how they develop. The best part though is the Christian faith for some of them and the lack of faith or beliefs for others. The various characters that populate the book aren't stiff or stereotyped. The story ends with a good feeling and leaves you looking forward to the next book. I found myself thinking about people who are so destitute around the world and could pray for them.

(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)
Plot and Setting: 4.5 -- Plot has many unique elements and no major holes. Surprises and bizarre scenes, some of which are pretty amusing. Setting is believable and consistent, but it bothered me to never know exactly where "Blackberry County" is.
Characters: 3.5 -- Most main characters are relatable, realistic, interesting, and/or dynamic. Minor characters are somewhat
stereotyped or simplified. There is depth to many characters, but so many of them are over-the-top bizarre, including our narrator, Cherry. It's a bit much at times. Cherry was a bit too oblivious, and many of her choices made me cringe. I often enjoy stories that manage to stick to one POV, but with her, I wanted a break from her perspective, and a glimpse into Grant's calmer, saner mind would've been nice. She does have some quality relationships with people, though, and I admire her ability to navigate relationships with prickly or challenging people.
Mechanics and Writing: 4.5 -- Few, if any, typos or word errors. Solid 1st-person POV, even though in this case I'd prefer some alternating viewpoints. Generally skillful writing.
Redeeming Value: 5 -- Well-developed, central, uplifting themes. Cherry, when she's not trying to reinvent herself to snag a man, goes through life being who she is, and influences some needy people around her for good. Strong message that we all tend to have a more negative view of ourselves than anyone else does. Sex, alcohol, violence, etc, are not glorified at all. Josh and Grant both share the choices that led them to AA, and how the program, and Jesus, has changed them so positively for the better.
Personal Enjoyment: 4 -- I liked it a lot. Highly enjoyable and very entertaining, with perhaps an issue or two that tempered my pleasure. I’d enjoy reading it again.
