I like the story. I read all of them and it was interesting to see the characters grow and to follow their life events throughout the books. I recommend it.

Non avevo mai letto un rosa storico ambientato in Nuova Zelanda quindi ho apprezzato particolarmente questa ambientazione insolita e abbastanza "selvaggia" (la fattoria dove vive la protagonista mi ha ricordato luoghi e atmosfere dei rosa western per il carattere di frontiera dell'ambientazione)... in alcuni punti però la trama è abbastanza triste (pesante, direi) e poco rosa...

Please, don't let the nasty cover put you off, it doesn't do justice to the book. This is the first instalment of the Promises to Keep series, which tells us the story of young Amy and of her family, starting in the 1880s. Everything is interesting, the characters, the way people lived at that time, the description of New Zealand farmlands, little towns and main town. I was hooked from the start (I nearly didn't download the book because of the cover which made me think that it was going to be a kind of fantasy) and I have now read all the books in the series and can't wait to get the next one. The books are well written and you feel that you know the characters. I felt very strongly for Amy and it was hard to learn of the condition of women in the past, especially in the countryside.
Do not hesitate, you won't regret it. Have a nice read.

I enjoyed this book so much that I have since bought & read the rest of the series & sequel.
Yes it is sad, but it is told through a woman's eyes in a struggling environment where girls, especially those on farms from big families, were not highly prized except to keep house & make babies.
This is the story of a very young girl who has to grow up too fast, while trying to keep her family members happy.
She is forced into a marriage by her step mother after being forced to give her baby away.
This story has romance, betrayal, history and strength along with family allegiance, however misguided by today's standards.
It does get a happier ending but you have to read the entire series.
Will read them all again.

This review is not just for Sentence of Marriage, which is the first book in Promises to Keep. I just finished the 3rd book, the ending of a long story started in Sentence of Marriage. Shayne Parkinson’s decision to publish one long novel in three parts has angered some reviewers, who feel cheated when the first two books end on nail-biting cliff hangers and they feel compelled to buy another book to find out what happens next.

Compelled to buy another book. That alone tells you a great deal about the series and about Shayne Parkinson’s writing. How many truly compelling books do we find in a year? Not many.

Promises to Keep is compelling because it is so well written. The story is not unusual: a sweet hard working country girl falls in love with a smooth talking city man who deserts her when she becomes pregnant. To save her family from shame, she’s forced to give away her baby, and to marry an older man she doesn’t love.

How old is that plot? They say there are no new stories, but this surely must be one of the oldest stories ever told. But, let me tell you, it has never been told better than Shayne Parkinson tells it.

The story is set in New Zealand, beginning in 1881 and spanning about 25 years. Every scene is rich with historical detail and an unerring sense of place and time. There are dozens of characters, but I never got them mixed up because each person was so perfectly described and set apart with a distinct personality and story of their own.

Bottom line, Shayne Parkinson is now on my short list of favorite writers. She knows how to tell a good story.
