Loved this easy to read book. Great story giving a bit of everything to enjoy. My favourite hero of the moment.
Didn't notice the spelling mistakes as i listened instead of read for most of the book.

In Through Smoke, J.R. Tate stirs up a recipe for not only trouble but danger and disaster. This is no cookbook thriller, however, because the ingredients of drug addiction, alcoholism, gambling, and family dysfunction create a mixture that is volatile, explosive and altogether edgy.

Tate's characters are believable and realistic. She has developed each person so that you are drawn into their struggles and find yourself loving and hating at the same time. You are attracted to the hero, Michael McGinnis, and begin rooting for him from the very beginning of the story. His family relationships are sadly all too familiar. His own struggle with alcohol, his brother's drug addiction and gambling problem lead Michael down the primrose path of enabling an addict and all the while rationalizing why he is putting himself and his girlfriend, Eva, in harm's way by protecting Casey, his younger brother.

Stir in the consequences of finding himself on the wrong side of Casey's bookie, mounting danger as the bookie seeks retribution, a workplace romance, some guilt and shame and you have a thrill ride that keeps you on the edge of your seat. You cheer Michael on as he does his job as a search and rescue firefighter and you hiss and boo as Viper, the bookie does his vilest to destroy not only Casey, but Michael and his girlfriend and their very lives. Plot twists, fire and death are the order of the day and Tate ties it all together in her recipe for trouble.

A fast paced read, you will find yourself hurrying to see what happens, who will live and who will die. Who will be victorious and who will get their just desserts? I was left hungry for more and Tate does not disappoint. Some of the characters move on with their lives in a sequel as thrilling as Through Smoke. No spoiler from me, however, you'll need to seek out "Backfire" to find out who has survived Viper's ungodly payback.

After reading this long book, all I could think of is this, lord no. I can't take more.

Mike and Eve work together she is a paramedic and he is a firefighter. I got a feeling in the start that mike was going to go to the hospital and meet up with the mom and fall in love, it's the way the story started. Next he's at a bar having a drink with Eve.

Ok so he has feelings for her, now we're. Getting someplace.
He has a brother who is a drug addict and crashes at mikes place. Oops he invites the bookie over and his name is Viper, catchy name, gee who names your kid viper? He is a sleazy guy no doubt, Casey owes Sleazy a lot of money and we'll know that's not a good thing. Long story, lots of twists and turns, but ever thing works out in the end.or so you hope....

Now here is where I have a problem. Stop no more about Viper ty man makes me sick. But I caught a little preview and god no he is back. I can't take it. I quit. I loved this story as it is, I can't go on with more of the sleaze ball guy.

This was a book that I read in a day and experienced all types of emotions! This book reminded me of so many movies that have come out it was insane.. I can almost see the characters... The younger brother who was a drug addict and couldn't stay out of trouble... The Older brother who has his demons but overcame them to get his life back on track. The mother who got lost after losing her husband and had a horrible time with her two young sons! Then you have the new girlfriend who is perfect for Mikey-older brother- but the timing is off at some point for them.. I cried like a baby for a death that occurs and then some of the events towards the end.. It truly POURED when it rained for Mikey and Casey (younger brother). This book dealt with love, forgiveness, strength, courage, grief and survival... It was a great read and worth it!
