I purchased this in April 2019 and have finally got around to reading it. I am glad I did. Set in Boston, US it is a good late 1880s/early 1900s murder mystery. Good characters; a believable storyline; some good twists due to wrong assumptions. Overall I recommend.

I liked this so much that I bought a second copy to give as a present. Well-done historical mysteries are my favorite kind of story. It was easy to get lost in Nell's world - the aftermath of the War Between the States, with soldiers trying to make new lives for themselves, and sometimes not doing very well. The reasons behind the excessive use of opium and its products at the time, and the extreme difficulties that an addict must endure, were explored with intelligence and compassion. There was a strong hint of a possible romance later in the series, with this book laying a good foundation in the development of strong, believable characters about whom the reader can care, and the tenuous partnership created by the two seeing each other through some very difficult times. I'll be looking for the sequel.

Set in the 19th Century, a look at how difficult life could be for a woman investigator. Nell had a very difficult youth but fortunately was rescued by a generous Dr who trained her in the duties of nursing. The difficult aspect of her early years together with her medical knowledge helped her to sort through the issues of a gentleman from a wealthy family accused of murder. A really great read

From the first to the last page of this great book I was totally enthralled in the story, having the feeling all the colourful characters coming alive around me. I felt transported to Boston common, to the old streets, the brothels, boardinghouses, opium dens and the palaces of the mill barons. Nell Sweeney is a wonderfully street wise young woman of humble beginnings who worked her way into respected society with admirable determination and when she becomes governess of the adopted child of one of the most wealthy families in Boston, she seems to have reached her goal.
But every family has secrets , some more dangerous than others and soon she lets herself be dragged into an adventure that demands all her survival and detecting skills.
