Patricia McLinn’s books have put her name on bestseller lists and her journalism career took her to The Washington Post for 20-mumble-mumble years. But it all started with secrets.

She learned to read at a tender age as a matter of self-preservation, because older siblings spelled words to keep secrets from her. Once Patricia discovered that the magic of written words allowed her to know people she hadn’t met and experience places she hadn’t visited, she was hooked.

She wanted to be a novelist from then on, though there was a detour. She received a BA in English Composition from Northwestern University. (Have you ever seen a job posting for an English Composition major? No. And you never will.) With her parents holding out for more practical pursuits, she added a masters in journalism from Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism in her fourth year. (Two degrees for the price of one!)

Not willing to be too practical, she became a sportswriter at a time when women doing that was quite rare, starting at the Rockford (Ill.) Register-Star and becoming assistant sports editor at the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer before moving on to The Washington Post.

But the dream of writing fiction kept calling. And journalism proved an excellent training ground, with enduring lessons in clarity, dialogue, research, drama, deadlines, conflict. Plus, it provided lots of characters. Lots and lots of characters.

Patricia has published more than 60 novels, with the characters for many more impatiently tapping their feet in the waiting room. Her books often include dry humor in exploring the resilience of people – whether in murder mysteries, romance, romantic suspense or women’s fiction.

Bette is a Type A successful business owner. Paul is a man determined to do the exact opposite of everything his domineering grandfather demanded or would approve of. Bette plans everything while Paul avoids plans at all costs. Despite their mutual attraction, neither can really imagine a future with the other even as they grow closer and more intimate.

Well-drawn characters and interesting situations kept me reading and will likely do the same for you, too. There are intimate scenes but they were tastefully done. If you enjoy opposites attract stories, give this one a try.

Another plus -- it was refreshingly well written and edited.

PRELUDE TO A WEDDING is a stand alone read with a HEA. The hero is a kid at heart, happy go lucky kind of guy. No schedules, no plans, just fun and a good time. Then he meets the heroine. She is by the book on time, sticks to lists and schedules and 5 year plans. She has no time for the fun loving hero. Of course, she grabs his attention and he wants to show her how to have fun. She resist, knowing that he will just break her heart and then move on to the next good time.

However, nothing ever goes as planned. They each have lessons to learn about life and why they are the way they are. All the characters are very likable. They are smart, funny, and strong. You really do like them and want them to find a happy ever after. But, do opposites really attract? Can they make it work or is one doomed to be hurt? A really good read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I definitely recommend it. You finish reading it feeling good. There are other books in the series but it seems like each one will stand alone.

Bette Wharton is a detail orientated, always by the schedule type of person. She looks to the future and knows what she wants. And she doesn't want anyone or anything to stand in her way. Paul Monroe is a child at heart and only lives in the moment, and it usually is something fun and unexpected. He doesn't want anyone or anything running his life. Paul needs a temporary assistant and Bette's company comes highly rated. As soon as Paul meets the boss, Bette, it seems to be his mission to get this straight laced lady to loosen up. It's a back and forth romance where both are afraid to give up their hearts. I thought the story line was very good, but I felt the steamy scenes were way over done and just too much and too often. I didn't care for the character of Paul. I just never could picture him as a professional adult. He might have been a kid at heart, but I found him very immature. That really took away from the story for me.

Paul Monroe and Bette Wharton are complete opposites in how they approach life but the old saying is, ' Opposites attract.' Paul is an appraiser of vintage toys, baseball cards and model trains. Bette Wharton has a temporary employment service that she started with goal, plans to reach her goals and has worked to reach her goals and dreams for her company. Along the way she has lost contact with friends and lost the ability to laugh and have fun.

She realizes Paul is a kid at heart and when he finds her attractive she feels threatened by his live each moment as it comes. The love story is sweet with lots of conflicting feelings and a very good story with well-developed characters. Prelude to a Wedding is the perfect title for two people not looking to get married and resisting even the idea of marriage.

I thoroughly enjoyed Bette. Paul was a little frustrating towards the end. I like how they came together. I like the style of writing. Paul’s determination to not grow up and to not do anything his grandfather wanted got tiresome but love prevailed in the end. I think I lost a little respect for Bette when she gave in when she knew she could only get so much from Paul. It’s like, come on, you’re worth more than that!
For those who care: I don’t recall swearing. There were a few sex scenes but not very in-depth, more closed door type with some heavy petting.

'Prelude...' Is a well written, often funny, frequently touching romantic comedy. It's a classic story of opposites attract, but what I liked was that the backstory for each of the two main characters, Bette and Paul, was solidly composed to provide good, believable characterization. The obstacles and complications that they faced as their relationship developed were believable given their respective backgrounds. The dialog is frequently very funny and the supporting characters, who will undoubtably star in the sequels, were interesting.

Bottom line: it's a light, frothy romantic read and you'll see the ending a mile off, but you should enjoy the journey. If they were a little younger, I can see Sandra Bullock and Matthew McConahey in the starring roles.

I don't think I've ever read a story quite like this and that's a good thing! This author has a wonderful way of putting together words that make for a really fun read. A great part of this story is how the characters, Bette and Paul, spar back and forth and create such a fun atmosphere for making a loving relationship while fighting against doing exactly that thing. The characters are very well developed and the plot is great I highly recommend this book

The first pages are misleading as they are funny and seem the prelude of a delightful book. Then the plot becomes obvious and less interesting. The two main characters, Bette and Paul, have a very different approach to life. She is organised and responsible, she leaves nothing to chance and everything is under control and strictly scheduled. On the contrary, Paul lives for the moment and puts fun ahead of responsibility. As we all know, opposites attract and they fall in love with each other. From this moment on, every page describes a love scene: they either make love or can’t think about anything else but sex and sensuality. The plot is repetitive and highly predictable. You can easily guess what is going to come next. Honestly, it was not for me.
