This is from a news headline: ” A Florida woman has been accused of entering the penguin enclosure to teach them to tap dance, using a live alligator as her partner. Jacksonville FL PD state she was also dressed as a pineapple.” Crazy right? Kinda hard to believe? So I did a little digging around to see if the report was real or fake. It took way longer than it should have for me to find that it was fake. I am not gonna lie. I was disappointed that it wasn’t true. It’s not like I want to hear about animals being hurt. Maybe I didn’t like being lied to. DARN YOU INTERNET!!!!

The time I picked up an NBA superstar while looking like a swamp thing in a hair salon…

And if you know me, this is one hundred percent on-brand for Becca Montgomery.

You see, I’m starting a new job on Monday at a sports TV network, and I was treating myself to a way too expensive cut at one of Miami’s chicest hair salons in preparation when he walked in.

By he, I mean, a tall, inked, European, and breathtakingly hot NBA superstar named Antoni Nowak.

And Antoni happens to be interested in me — despite seeing me in that awful salon lighting, with wet hair, and draped in a smock.

Me. I refuse to believe him at first. I’m not a model. I babble. I’m neurotic. The cherry on my unusual sundae is I’m a hypochondriac, too.

Antoni isn’t deterred. Rather, he’s even more intrigued when I fly my weird flag at full staff.

But when I go viral due to a most humiliating situation, I wonder how long it will be until Antoni realizes this is who I truly am and the novelty of dating me wears off. I’ve already fallen for this basketball star, for the man he is outside of dribbling a ball. And the idea of him dumping me breaks my heart.

Add in a coworker who feels I’m not just unworthy of a man like Antoni, but also an embarrassment to the network, and I suddenly find myself not only questioning my relationship, but my career, too.

If this were a game of basketball, I’m about to make a pressured shot from the three-point line to win the game. Will it be an air ball? Or will I find confidence in myself to sink the winning shot and keep not only Antoni but my job by the final buzzer?

Zero Sum Galaxy (The Logic of Games Book 1)
by Thomas Brookside

FREE for a limited time

Faster-than-light travel made every first strike fatal to its target, and turned every war into a war of extermination. On a space station orbiting a distant star, humanity’s last hope for survival is a lie.

Security investigator Jack Borman has one job: find the defector. Viktor Slayton — brilliant, idealistic, and dangerously well-informed — has gone missing with stolen files that could destabilize the entire Eta Leonis colony system.

But the deeper Jack goes, the more he suspects that the real conspiracy isn’t about what Slayton stole. It’s about what Slayton knew.

Zero Sum Galaxy is the first novel in The Logic of Games, a science fiction thriller series set aboard a generation station where FTL travel, resource scarcity, and the mathematics of interstellar war have produced a society built on careful, necessary deception — and one investigator who is about to learn what that deception has been protecting.

For readers of Alastair Reynolds, John Scalzi, and the political thrillers of John le Carré transplanted to the far edge of human space.

The complete first trilogy — Zero Sum Galaxy, Veil of Ignorance, and Mutual Defection Round — is available now.
