Okay. So who is in charge here? A few days ago I was out in my front driveway and a little bird, a House Finch I think, was cheep cheep cheeping at me. Pretty demanding tone it had. I said hello because I don’t want to be rude, but it just kept on cheeping at me in a very insistent way. I didn’t think much of it, and went about doing whatever crazy stuff I do in the driveway. I couldn’t tell you what it was, but apparently it was not as important as what the little bird had in mind for me. I took a few steps closer to the nagging bird, and that’s when the cat jumped out of the huge ornamental grass. That jerk was hiding in the grass waiting to pounce on a poor innocent critter. I see why the bird was sounding the alarm. It was time for action! I can’t have my feathered resident’s lives in danger. The answer is pine cones. I love this idea. I went to the park and got about three buckets of pine cones and filled the underneath of the grasses with them. Now those pesky cats can’t hide in them. BRILLIANT! I wish I came up with it, but no. It has been few days and it seems to be working.

From USA Today bestselling author Robert I. Katz.

Surgeon Richard Kurtz has recently accepted the position of Chief of the Division of General Surgery at Easton Medical Center, and is not surprised to find himself dealing with a new set of problems. Still, he had been expecting those problems to be professional, not personal, and so he is taken aback when Joanna Levinson, the wife of Peter Levinson, a surgeon, asks Kurtz to speak with her husband.

Peter Levinson is disturbed. He’s not sleeping at night. He’s going out at all hours. He’s visibly distressed.

Levinson, it turns out, has reasons to be distressed. An old friend, lawyer Richie Capaldi, has suffered a traumatic brain injury. Two other old friends have vanished… and then Peter Levinson is given an ultimatum by mobster Leo Berlusconi to pay back money that Berlusconi claims Levinson owes him.

Lew Barent and Harry Moran are investigating the assault on Richie Capaldi and Kurtz has information that might help them solve the case.

Kurtz is not a cop, as his cop friends keep reminding him, and he has no desire to interfere with a police investigation, but Kurtz has never run from a fight, and when the threats against Peter Levinson escalate, Kurtz, Barent and Moran find themselves embroiled in a conspiracy involving prostitution, fraud, blackmail and long-simmering revenge.

The Streaker: The Tale of a Modern-Day Cynic
by Jackson Forelle
5 Stars (2 Reviews)

FREE for a limited time

The Streaker, winner of the 2025 Molinos De Viento Book Award — “celebrating the author who charges in boldly, lance ready, and brilliantly misses the point” — chronicles the journey of Rye Smyth, a disillusioned (and likely concussed) philosophy professor who inherits a run-down scallop boat and sets off through the Caribbean. A modern-day Diogenes, Rye is determined to live a simple, dog-like existence as he seeks kindred spirits in the tropics. He’s also set on writing an all-important book he is certain will change the world.

Rye somehow successfully recruits his beer-drinkin’, weed-smokin’ childhood friend, Stems, to captain the vessel on this quixotic journey. Things really get interesting when Rye and Stems meet up with surfers Kaia and Nori in the Bahamas. The confident and adventurous couple become de facto guides for Rye and his friend, pulling them into island life, unexpected detours, and a kaleidoscope of memorable characters.

A legal subplot simmers throughout, centered on the true ownership of the scallop boat. It opens the door to some of the book’s most entertaining moments — comical anecdotes about practicing law in a small coastal Virginia community. While The Streaker is Mr. Forelle’s debut novel, he brings over twenty-five years of legal experience in Virginia to the page.

The Streaker is a heartwarming book that offers a lighthearted but thoughtful look at what we’re all searching for in our careers — and, more broadly, in our lives.

There’s a battle going on in Bramblett County, Georgia, and Realtor Lily Sprayberry is in the thick of it.

Welcome to my idyllic, small, Southern town, Bramblett County, where even the quietest Monday mornings can take a deadly turn. I never expected to find my feisty and cantankerous older client, Myrtle Redbecker, lying lifeless on her kitchen floor – and with a cast-iron skillet as the weapon, no less.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, I soon realized that Myrtle’s death was just the beginning of a dangerous journey. With the weight of the investigation on my shoulders and my ex-boyfriend – the local sheriff – breathing down my neck, things went quickly from bad to worse.

But Myrtle had entrusted me with a promise: to sell her property to a developer and not an individual buyer. As I began to dig into the mysterious circumstances surrounding her death, I discovered a generations-old battle over the land – and the rumored treasure buried beneath it.

Suddenly, it became clear that some people would stop at nothing to get their hands on that treasure, and I found myself in the crosshairs of a dangerous plot. If I didn’t solve this mystery quickly, I could wind up just like poor Myrtle – six feet under and forgotten.
