It is surprisingly hard for me to avoid cake. Tomorrow is my youngest baby basset’s 14th birthday. I KNOW!! I look too young to have teenage sons. Crazy! Enough about me… back to me. I am trying to cut back on sugar and eat healthy, and all the other stuff that makes me smile, but there is always a cake around every corner. It’s like it is stalking me. Every month of the year there is a reason to have cake. I can only deny myself so many times before I crack and eat a huge piece. It never ends with just one piece either. As soon as that cake makes an appearance I am coming up with a plan to get a second and third piece. I am amazingly successful at coming home from parties with cakes that aren’t even mine. I have mad skills when it comes to acquiring cakes. Today I will be buying the Costco chocolate cake for the family celebration on Sunday. I will have to buy a separate dessert that will  keep me from eating the birthday cake before it is time. I hate you cake. I LOVE YOU!!!

Addison returned from the beginning of her Pa’s cattle drive with two cows and two calves that got mixed with the market cattle. When she got home, the house was empty, the garden neglected, and a weeks’ worth of eggs still in the nests. As she began to piece the clues together, she realized that Nola just up and left without leaving a note or anything.
Addy, as everyone except her step-mother called her, concluded that she alone would have to keep the ranch running until Pa returned. The trouble was, he didn’t. For several months she struggled to keep the secret about Nola deserting them, but the town already knew. What they didn’t know was that Pa hadn’t returned; they expected that he was only a few days behind the rest of the wranglers.
The ranch was too much for the Addy even though she was tall and strongly built; something that Nola ridiculed her about constantly. Nola’s biggest complaint was that Addy was ‘an ox of a girl,’ among other things. Doing all the inside chores and maintaining or repairing things on the ranch would work for a week or two, but it had been months.
She had food and a roof over her head but not the strength or energy to run a ranch single handedly. The Wilson children were facing troubles of their own, after their parents were killed in an accident, until the Parson and his wife convinced them to join forces.
With Thelma’s help, Addy began to see that she wasn’t the misfit Nola made her out to be. Together, with the help from Darrel and Minnie, they became the family each of them lost.
