This is an actual conversation I just had with myself. “I gotta put the money in the card I bought for Wyatt’s (my oldest baby basset) graduation. Where is the card? (looking in EVERY drawer in the house) GRRRR!!! Why the heck are there so many empty drawers?? You emptied them all to become a minimalist. Did I throw away the card? Nope, you put it somewhere safe. In a drawer? (still looking through all the drawers in the house. Some for the third time) No.. you did not put it in a drawer, you emptied all the drawers! (getting angry with myself for still asking about the freaking drawers). Where did I put the card!!?? I DON’T KNOW WHERE YOU PUT THE CARD!!! Is it in this drawer? No.. it’s not. Can you please stop looking in the drawers? It just seems like it should be in a drawer. I understand that it seems like it should be in a drawer, but you looked in all the drawers and it is not in any of them. Try something else. I’m going to make the bed, clean the kitchen, then check the drawers again.  For the love of PETE!!! I’m hungry. Where did I put the strawberry jam (looking in the refrigerator drawer)??

The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. With a new trainee detective in tow, Smith begins to unravel the truth about what happened to Wayne Fletcher. As the investigation proceeds, it becomes obvious that others are involved – some seem determined to prevent it, some seem to be taking too much interest. In the end Smith operates alone, having stepped too far outside standard procedures to ask for support. He knows his own safety might be at risk but he has not calculated on the life of his young assistant also being put in danger.
