Poor hubby. I decorated for Easter and now he has about twenty bunnies staring at him at his desk at the dinner table. Everywhere he looks there is a bunny watching him. A couple of them really look kinda hurt by him. Not sure why anyone would make a bunny that looks like a victim of a crime. I think they were going for inquisitive, but they missed the mark. Maybe when hubby isn’t looking I will switch them around to give him a new feeling of being watched  each day. Gotta keep hubby on his toes.

A baker with secrets
Witches in trouble
The cameras are rolling
On your marks, get set, die!

Poppy Wilkinson is thrilled to be chosen as a contestant on The Great British Baking Contest. As an American with English roots, winning the crown as Britain’s Best Baker would open doors she’s dreamed of. In more ways than one. Appearing on the reality show is her chance to get into Broomewode Hall and uncover the secrets of her past.

But strange things are happening on the show’s set: accusations of sabotage, a black cat that shadows Poppy, suspiciously unsociable residents at Broomewode Hall — and the judges can be real witches.

There are murmurs that Broomewode is an energy vortex. It certainly makes Poppy see and do things that aren’t exactly normal, and seems to draw interesting characters to the neighborhood.

When a fellow contestant dies in mysterious circumstances, Poppy has more to worry about than burned pies and cakes that won’t rise. There’s a murderer on the loose and it’s up to Poppy and her new friends to solve the crime before it becomes a real show-stopper.

Tomorrow’s World: Darkly Humorous Tales From The Future
by Guy Portman
3.9 Stars (39 Reviews)
Genre: Humor & Satire | Short Stories | Literary Fiction

FREE for a limited time

Escape to the future with this hilarious and thought-provoking read.

Englishman Terrence has had enough of accountancy. After all, it’s been his job for over six decades. He’d bow out if the government didn’t keep increasing the mandatory retirement age. At this rate, Terrence will be working until doomsday.

American plutocrat Walter has harnessed the power of age-defying medication and enjoys the life of a conceited centenarian. But many are fed up with his kind. If the situation doesn’t change fast, there could be a revolution.

With its dark humour and gripping narrative, Tomorrow’s World paints a vivid picture of a future that’s a little too close for comfort.

‘Takes our current foibles and obsessions to their logical, gruesome and absurd conclusions’ – Adam Riley, Comedian

‘This book will certainly have you turning the pages to see what happens next… ‘ – The Daily Squib

I binge watched Black Mirror a while back and that show was ‘Dark Humour’ very much in the same vein – Goodreads Review

If you like black comedy, you’ll love Tomorrow’s World

40,251 words/2.5 hours reading time

Themes include democracy, capitalism, secularism, immigration & the environment.

Through short scenes flipping between various levels of society, we’re taken year by year through a future full of psychotic capitalism, hyper-branding and extreme virtual reality. This is a world not a million miles removed from our own, where celebrities are worshipped like gods, drones are as common as pigeons and life expectancies for the rich are becoming biblical.

Like all great visionary satires, the book takes our current foibles and obsessions to their logical, gruesome and absurd conclusions. And it’ll make you laugh out loud along the way.

That’s because Guy’s particular vein of dark humour is on show in each prescient and deadpan vignette. These are not just about our near future. By giving us caustic glimpses through the best part of two hundred years of political, social and cultural upheaval, Tomorrow’s World is constantly evolving.

In essence, it’s a warning about the ramifications of a grotesquely ageing population, as demonstrated by recurring characters Walter and Terrence: American plutocrat and British worker respectively.

It may be great living to over 150. But how would you feel if you had to work for an extra half a century or so?

A darkly humorous, satirical extravaganza.

How will one girl survive the horrors of Auschwitz on her own?

Poland, 1944. The train slowed and halted with a squeal of the brakes. It felt like they waited in the carriage for an eternity, but eventually, the heavy doors opened, directly into the chaos outside.

Sarh Leibovits, a 16-year-old Jewish girl, was a passenger on the train, together with her family. Within minutes, their horrific fate was sealed.

The little family spent its final minutes together on the platform at Auschwitz, before its members were dispersed in all directions, and each was left alone to their own fate.

Isolated from her family, Sara was left alone to face the many physical labors and the lowest points of her life, while trying to maintain values like courage, faith and helping others, all to survive the true manifestation of Hell on earth – Auschwitz.

This is the moving story of Sara Leibovits, laced with hair-raising descriptions of her time in Auschwitz and the incredible pain and hardships she went through, together with the rest of the survivors. Her story is intertwined with that of her daughter, seventy years later, who embodies the voice of the second generation and completes the Holocaust survivors’ tale.
