I had to have a sit down talk with my baby bassets this morning about a very serious issue. VERY SERIOUS! Here’s the deal. At any party we have at our house, that my neighbor bakes her delicious chocolate chip cookies for, you ask me once and once only, if I hid some cookies for us. My neighbor’s cookies are the best in the world. No joke. Any who knows my neighbor, or even knows OF my neighbor, knows her cookies are worth pushing a small child over to get to. Just push that kid right over. Seriously…don’t let anyone slow you down from getting to one of those cookies. I explained the importance to my baby bassets that you remind me very quietly and only once. Never mention it again for the rest of the party. If you talk about it too much about it, you run the risk of someone overhearing you and getting their own ideas of sneaking a few extra cookies in their bag. The funny thing about this whole cookie situation is how serious everyone is about it. When we are all in the act of hoarding a few extra cookies in our bags and purses we are dead serious. No laughing is taking place. It’s so hilarious how serious we are about taking the cookies. People have gotten mad. Okay. I will tell the full truth… I’m”The people” who get mad. I keep it in my head though. I know I’m not the only one who has secretly gotten mad at someone for taking more than one cookie. You can see it in their eyes. The hate. The death glares. And no, even when she gaves us the recipe, none of us have been able to duplicate it. NO ONE HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL!!! Except her daughters.. thank golly.

A serial killer is abducting, torturing, and murdering young women in a small community in central Maine. Seeming to select his victims at random, he acts out the rituals of the Spanish Inquisition before committing their bodies to the sacred waters of nearby Sebec Lake. Anne Quinn, an investigator for the Piscataquis County sheriff’s office, and Detective Douglas Bateman with the Major Crimes Unit of the Maine State Police join forces in tracking him down. Hiding in plain sight, the killer is clearly from the local community and plays a deadly “catch me if you can” game with Quinn and Bateman. He seems determined to humiliate them and demonstrate his superior intellect, leading them to suspect that perhaps there is a deeper motive and purpose behind his string of murders.

In the dark days before the end of the first millennium, Scotland (or Scotia as some called it) was a leaderless hodgepodge of tribes, clans and warring factions all bent on the same thing–domination of the land. Wizards, sorcerers and magicians still plied their trade, though much of their power had given way to the machinations of men and their war machines. To the south of Scotia lay the realm of the Saxons ruled by Ethelred the Unready and his ruthless minions. To the west, Ireland had just come of age. Everywhere else the constant threat of a lightning swift Viking incursion loomed over the land.
Growing up in this lawless world is a displaced Daynin McKinnon, heir to an ancient familial keep on the island of Rhum. He and his grandfather Ean scratch out a living amongst the Saxons, careful never to divulge their clan heritage. That all changes when Kruzurk Makshare chooses Daynin as the ideal prospect to help him bring down a vile sorcerer named The Seed of Cerberus, ferreted away in his impregnable fortress at Blackgloom. Little does Kruzurk know that in so doing, he will launch young Daynin, himself and others on a vast, dangerous quest that no one could have foreseen.
